TOP was almost identical. No way a scrub team like BS should have driven up and down the field on our D all night with an untested rookie QB even with our vanilla D and tons of substitutions. We pretty much let them dink and dunk for big CUMULATIVE CHUNKS of yardage on drives. Their O dictated the pace not our D. With a better QB they score at least 2 more TDs.
Not a negavol but IMO we’ve got some D issues to correct. But if you want to sit down and construct a case on paper that our D did great then suit yourself but I hope our coaches don’t share your view.
They are scatbacks and will not be able to run the ball when the defense knows they are running. This maybe partly the fault of the Oline but the results looked similar to last season. They will be OK but I was hoping for a group that could run whenever they want. 3rd down and 3 or 4 will be tough.
Agree - it’s hard to get sacks when you concede the short routes and the other team is happy to take them. On the other hand, all but one or two of their drives eventually fizzled out so maybe limiting them to short gains was the right approach. They could have been a lot better against the pass.
For whatever reason, Banks had the CB's 10 yds off. Any time UT blitzed or got push, their QB just hit a 5 yd slant, out, or slant. I think they had some automatics too. UT would have 10 yd cushions. BSU would cut the DL and hit those little 5 yd passes.
If Banks doesn't get more aggressive and start knocking receivers off their routes and timing... you can blame the DL all you like but the failure is scheme.
Never said we can’t improve. We have flaws like most teams not named Alabama or Georgia and even they can improve.Because if you aren’t finding something to improve each week, you are guaranteed to flop face First into the ground eventually. Ask Saban how many games he has been satisfied with in his career…..
Another cyber jerk. I watched the game. He fumbled the football. It wasn't the last second of the half. They would have scored. Clearly you didn't watch the game. Go away.
Dude I'm not reading your messages anymore including this one. I don't have time for your negativity. It was the last seconds of the first half not the last second. I don't know why you are hung up on a meaningless drive. By that logic, UT offense really scored 75 points because they pulled Hooker with nearly 30 minutes left in the game.
A year or two passing wont magically put us on the level of Alabama. Finishing in the top 5 in recruiting several consecutive years with a few number one classes sprinkled in will put us on that level. As that is actually what put Alabama on that level....Overall report:
I believe the offense held their own and did a great job. As long as you have hooker leading this offense, I'm not concerned with that unit. Scale 1-10, I would give the offense an 8.
Defensive was kind of embarrassing tonight. If Ball state actually had a good QB and a decent head coach, this game would have been closer. Like years past, Tennessee continues to struggle Defending outside slants as well stopping third down convertions. That Defensive line tonight, very piss poor. Defensively, this side of the ball gets a 3. 0 sacks and Paddock had all day to throw, we were very fortunate that he was an inexperienced QB
Tennessee has a good team but not a great team. When you see Georgia or Alabama play against cupcakes, you can see the sheer talent emerge from multiple players, in Tennessee's case, I haven't seen that in a UT player besides Hooker.
Tennessee will compete against most of the SEC this season, still a year or two away from getting on Alabama's level
Go Vols! Beat Pitt!
We scored 59 points (could have scored 80+), using 5 quarterbacks. Hooker completed 72 percent of his passes. Odd observations based on what actually happened.
Easy to throw 72% when they’re all to the flats and screens. Scoring 59 on no one doesn’t make you explosive. We lacked the big plays we have grown used to seeing
