Thoughts after game 1?

TOP was almost identical. No way a scrub team like BS should have driven up and down the field on our D all night with an untested rookie QB even with our vanilla D and tons of substitutions. We pretty much let them dink and dunk for big CUMULATIVE CHUNKS of yardage on drives. Their O dictated the pace not our D. With a better QB they score at least 2 more TDs.

Not a negavol but IMO we’ve got some D issues to correct. But if you want to sit down and construct a case on paper that our D did great then suit yourself but I hope our coaches don’t share your view.

They had two long drives. With our offense, when time of possession ends up equal, we've likely beaten the heck out of you.

They are scatbacks and will not be able to run the ball when the defense knows they are running. This maybe partly the fault of the Oline but the results looked similar to last season. They will be OK but I was hoping for a group that could run whenever they want. 3rd down and 3 or 4 will be tough.

Then the entire SEC is filled with scat backs. As I noted, our RB room is roughly the same physical size as the rest of the league. I have no clue why you think someone 5'11 and 213 is a scatback or that they can't run the ball in SEC play. Tyler Badie ran it for over 1600 yards and averaged 133 a game last year at 5'8 194. That easily led the league. Barry Sanders is a "scat back" and was nearly unstoppable no matter what people thought he was doing on that play even with bad offensive lines, speaking of which. It's silly to think a running back has to be 230 pounds to get short yardage. It's on our line in that situation.

Was definitely unimpressed with the defense. 3rd down going to be a problem again. Not sure we win more than 7 games this year. Hopefully, I am wrong. Hooker made some throws that would have been pick 6s against better teams. Hopefully week 2 will be a lot better.

I think one big thing positive about the game was recruiting.
We are in the mix for some good talent and them seeing Heup playing so many players given a chance to play in the game certainly can‘t hurt.
I love the fact Heup likes to give all players a chance to get on the field, it makes for better more spirited practices plus creates more TEAM loyalty and atmosphere.

They could have been a lot better against the pass.

For whatever reason, Banks had the CB's 10 yds off. Any time UT blitzed or got push, their QB just hit a 5 yd slant, out, or slant. I think they had some automatics too. UT would have 10 yd cushions. BSU would cut the DL and hit those little 5 yd passes.

If Banks doesn't get more aggressive and start knocking receivers off their routes and timing... you can blame the DL all you like but the failure is scheme.
Agree - it’s hard to get sacks when you concede the short routes and the other team is happy to take them. On the other hand, all but one or two of their drives eventually fizzled out so maybe limiting them to short gains was the right approach.

Because if you aren’t finding something to improve each week, you are guaranteed to flop face First into the ground eventually. Ask Saban how many games he has been satisfied with in his career…..
Never said we can’t improve. We have flaws like most teams not named Alabama or Georgia and even they can improve.

Just say you didn't watch the game, it was the last few seconds of the half and UT had already packed it in as I stated

Another cyber jerk. I watched the game. He fumbled the football. It wasn't the last second of the half. They would have scored. Clearly you didn't watch the game. Go away.

It was the last seconds of the first half not the last second. I don't know why you are hung up on a meaningless drive. By that logic, UT offense really scored 75 points because they pulled Hooker with nearly 30 minutes left in the game.

My thoughts:

Bench Warren
Pass rush has to be much better
Offense has to be more explosive
Hooker has to be more accurate
Had(d)en looked great
Safety play seems to still be a problem
Second team offensive line left a lot to be desired

Dude I'm not reading your messages anymore including this one. I don't have time for your negativity.

Geez so if we shut them out you would’ve given them a 5? The defense really only gave up 7 points. The late FG was on the 4th string offense. The objective is to keep the opponent out of the end zone and they did that most of the night. 3 is too harsh a grade for that unit.

A 49pt victory and folks still want to complain. Someone please tell me what a 59-10 dub is supposed to look like for this team ?!

I think we got to do everything the coaching staff wanted to do for this game. All three QBs got to play, and Milton looked much better than last year. We had a dozen receivers make catches and several had some learning opportunities that will help them grow. The top 3 RBs got plenty of carries and we were able to play everyone in the 2 deep on both sides of the ball. It was live action in a real game to help our guys reacclimate to the game. The coaches got to see enough snaps from all the players in the 2 deep to see some coachable moments. And I don't think we had any injuries.

We're now ready for a road opener against a good Pitt team.

Overall report:

I believe the offense held their own and did a great job. As long as you have hooker leading this offense, I'm not concerned with that unit. Scale 1-10, I would give the offense an 8.

Defensive was kind of embarrassing tonight. If Ball state actually had a good QB and a decent head coach, this game would have been closer. Like years past, Tennessee continues to struggle Defending outside slants as well stopping third down convertions. That Defensive line tonight, very piss poor. Defensively, this side of the ball gets a 3. 0 sacks and Paddock had all day to throw, we were very fortunate that he was an inexperienced QB

Tennessee has a good team but not a great team. When you see Georgia or Alabama play against cupcakes, you can see the sheer talent emerge from multiple players, in Tennessee's case, I haven't seen that in a UT player besides Hooker.

Tennessee will compete against most of the SEC this season, still a year or two away from getting on Alabama's level

Go Vols! Beat Pitt!
A year or two passing wont magically put us on the level of Alabama. Finishing in the top 5 in recruiting several consecutive years with a few number one classes sprinkled in will put us on that level. As that is actually what put Alabama on that level....

We scored 59 points (could have scored 80+), using 5 quarterbacks. Hooker completed 72 percent of his passes. Odd observations based on what actually happened.

Easy to throw 72% when they’re all to the flats and screens. Scoring 59 on no one doesn’t make you explosive. We lacked the big plays we have grown used to seeing

You said you wanted him to be more accurate. Which basically means you want him to lead the nation in completion percentage because any better and that's where he'd be. That's the Miss State QB who averages 6 yards per attempt. 4 yards less than we averaged yesterday.

We took what the defense gave, ran clock for us, and scored 45 points before we called off the dogs and played 4 more QBs in the final 22 minutes or so.
