To Protect and to Serve II

That is the irritating thing when it comes to cops on this issue. The fall back on the defense of "just following orders"/"enforcing the law", yet they don't use the power of their union to influence changes in the laws or in developing better training.

The “we don’t make the laws argument” first shows a lack of morality and second is a lie. Their unions 100% ensure gun laws, the drug war, and other laws stay intact.

Police unions ensure drugs are illegal? Huh?

100%. Police unions, prison guard unions, sheriff’s unions, all fight to keep drug and gun laws intact. Their lobbyists were strongly involved in TN not allowing medical marijuana last session and not becoming a right to carry state.

Never thought about that. If we have fewer crimes, we have a need for fewer cops...

Wait until automated vehicles are more commonplace. What are municipalities going to do when traffic court is empty? No one speeding or running stop signs is going to mean big budget issues down the line especially for small towns. Legalize weed and there goes a lot of seizure funds and court fees.

Ever notice the interdiction teams on the interstate are always pointed at the southbound lanes? They don’t want to stop the drugs, they want to stop the money. The drugs are no good to them, they’re worthless and will just be burned. But the cash can be seized to buy new toys to fight the war they’re not super interested in winning. If they were they’d be halting the drugs. Think about the crime and violence committed to get a brick of coke converted to cash. The cops are more than happy to turn a blind eye to all that to ensure they get a new armored car or night vision goggles.
