Any better than Dooley?

Always an excuse.

So a ream with a national championship winning coach goes winless in the conference last year while we go 1-7 with Dooley. Yet its clear that they have so much more talent as to flat out embarrass us like they did today?

Makes zero sense

If you watched the game today and thought the talent was equal I don't know what to tell you

I like Jones too, however I think his slogans are and have been corny and annoying, and now that we are getting trounced every week,it makes them even worse. I dont know how I feel about his keeping silent commits and unveiling them after a blowout loss. I understand why he is doing it,it just feels kinda like he is trying to play the fan base. To be fair, Dooley had an incredibly talented QB,two of the best wide receivers I have ever seen in orange, and a competent defensive coordinator, when we smoked Cinci. Jones has none of those things now.

Exactly right about the talent that we lost last year, & those 3 players leaving is exactly why we cant even come close to comparing last years team with this years.

A key point here is that Auburn already had the players needed to fit Malzahn's system since he was recently at Auburn under Chizik. That in and of itself makes a huge difference.

And so do you and others.... you are in denial. The defensive coaching for the last 3 games has been very bad. Yet you guys keep blaming "talent" or "speed" for things that are COACHABLE.

Walk-ons....at nickel back. We have played at least 5 top ten teams. Keep it up.

Defensive playcalling wasn't good... but when a QB can outrun everyone on your defense, you're screwed.

Can't teach speed

I believe in butch jones. He will turn things around if recruiting keeps going the way it is. As if now though, I'm worried about vandy. We can beat them but we have to play good.

yeah, no doubt. I hear dooley is on the short list for usc and texas. we just didn't appreciate what we had.

Listen, I don't know if Butch is the long term answer or not. There are certainly legitimate reasons for concern. But, I am going to give him time. He inherited a mess, mid-level talent, and a terrible culture problem (which is the biggest problem on the team IMO). And because of depth issues, he can't bench a lot of players to make a statement, because he doesn't have anybody behind the current starters.

I think the incoming class is going to be the beginning of a culture change. Many of those kids seem to be leaders.

I couldn't agree more.

I agree...the blind loyalty here toward butch is sickening.....it was just like this as well when Dooley was here.....anyone loyal to butch at this point should go join a cult...guy has proven zero so far...only bright spot Is recruiting...

I understand it, when you're this bad you have to make yourself believe something. IMO CBJ is an improvement over Dooley but all the "Butch gets it" is comical at best. CBJ won in terrible conferences and he says nothing that every other coach in the nation doesn't say when he takes over at a new school. CBJ may get you back to being competitive but anybody that thinks that it's going to happen in the next couple of years better find a new hobby because the next couple of years are going to be a big disappointment.

Equal - who knows?
But teams even far apart in talent play a better game on defense than what we played.
C'mon - what game did you watch? We didn't lose by a couple of scores, or have a chance in the 3rd quarter or something only to be pulverized by a superior talented team. We were annihilated and made to look like a rent-a-win.
Can you guys making excuses not see the difference?

Reality is not an excuse it just is. Am I saying the coaches are perfect, of course not. But after watching last years team if you thought just because you insert a new coach we would get 7-8 wins then you set the bar too high

Yes, I can see that it is tough to have to use a walk-on at our starting nickel back. Wonder if Auburn has the same problem. They also had 2 special team returns, and our special teams have been solid. Yes- talent.

I don't know how long many of the posters on this site are but I suspect the average age to be about 25. I have a bit more time watching Tennessee football and I can tell you that even during Majors growing pains the team was almost always competitive.

and? different players different era different competition and different game really.

these players (regardless of how much effort they have given or whatever blah blah) just arent good. no competive gene not really that athletic and apparently no drive to really try to improve

but i guess you just want to vent and compare apples and oranges.

Auburn won 3 games last year because they didn't have Malzahn. Without him Chizik was, and will always remain, a terrible head coach.

I am not talking about 7 or 8 wins. Let's be clear. i am not talking about beating Auburn.
I am talking about just looking like a bottom tier SEC team. We did not look like that for at least 2 of the last 3 games, and maybe all 3.
I hope Coach Jones takes the view many of us have and not the approach people like you who make excuses have.
If he understands there is a serious problem he has more than enough time to correct it.

With the talent we have we are a bottom tier sec team. And I'm starting to pick up in the football forum it's all the coaches fault or your just making excuses

He also had Bray and Co. to work with last year. I'm fairly confident in saying the offense under Dooley's watch this season would have a colossal train wreck.
I doubt that we would be running a read option with a line and quarterback who were recruited for Chaney's offense.

Bingo!
The point is we have to get a great coach, not a Tommy Tuberville. Is Jones the next big thing? As this season wears on I an starting to wonder. Next year we will see if he can actually coach or is just really good with slogans.

Off the top of my head…I can't come up with a hire that wouldn't instantly be exponentially better than Dooley. That makes it a flawed question, IMO.

I am pretty sure Coach Jones sees what EXACTLY we are saying- we need more talent. I don't understand that statement at all. It is not an excuse.

Auburn last year and this year exemplifies the difference between having talent and no coaching, then good coaching this year with nearly same talent as last year. Even though Gus was gone a year, they still have more continuity in system and coaching than we do.

When you combine no coaching continuity, new system, slow and I mean slow defensive talent with walkons and inexperienced QB/receivers and then play 7 ranked teams, I'm not sure why anyone would expect any more than what we've seen. Still, you give us Ohio State's schedule, Butch and company would be demonstrating that we made the right hire.

This is going to take time and more than one top 5 class to fix. None of us want to wait, because it is way beyond old getting embarrassed every Saturday.

Next year will likely be worse, bud. They are losing a number if contributers that will be replaced by first and 2nd year players.
