Ament will improve

Based on what I’ve seen, I’m good with him not staying another year.

You don’t think an 18-year old freshman can improve? That he’s just a finished product? Don’t think he comes back, but I’d be excited about returning him following a full off-season in our S&C and a year of experience under his belt.

I think year is a wash. Yes we will still make the tourney, and even possibly stumble our way to a sweet sixteen, but I’m not counting on it.

I’m seeing double digit losses before March. Ament is not ready, though on the brightside, if he stays next year we could have a very solid team.

I think the chance he’s back at UT is very unlikely. If he returns to college it’ll be at a more offensive friendly program.

The one thing I noticed with Ament is he doesn’t know how to use his length and body to get the shot he wants.

He plays way too high and it makes it easier for defenders to keep him off balance.

Jay Bilas mentioned this in the Illinois game.

That can definitely be fixed with coaching but I don’t see Ament coming back next year.

Whenever we need to be dependent on incoming freshmen to feel good about our team (Jaden Springer, Keon Johnson, Kennedy Chandler) it's never a good sign of things to come. The transfer portal has been so much better for us. Please disagree if you think I'm misguided here. I don't follow basketball as closely as most of you.

After last night, we have seen enough to know that Ament is a bust.
I'm old enough to remember when most of our 5 star "busts" only averaged 8 or 9 ppg during the FR year and everyone complained until our 5 stars started averaging 11-14 ppg but now we are back to calling our 5-star FR a bust at 15.2 ppg...progress I guess.

True but go get the freaking rebound. At least 5 pts given up instead of ball in our hands just from simple effort and awareness.
Considering minutes played, I think the box score shows that JP may have been the most efficient big in the Arkansas game.

Nate Ament 32min 13pts 3reb
DeWayne Brown 16min 6pts 4reb
Felix Okpara 31min 3pts 7reb
J.P. Estrella 10min 8pts 4reb
Jaylen Carey 16min 6pts 3reb

min pts reb
Nate Ament 32 13 3
DeWayne Brown II 16 6 4
Felix Okpara 31 3 7
J.P. Estrella 10 8 4
Jaylen Carey 16 6 3
He’s a great asset on offense but that stat doesn’t take into account mistakes on the defensive end and rebounding. 2 lazy efforts on rebounds alone gave them 5 points, including a momentum changing dunk which got the crowd into it. Hard to put a value on plays like that.

I wouldn’t be excited about it, but sure he can improve. Would he? No clue. I thought so at first, but the problem is a lot of the issue seems to be mentality. That might not be fixable.

JP is almost always our most efficient scorer...time to concede some defense for offense as we did with DK and Chaz.

Stats show JP is our 2nd best rebounder on the team just behind Carey so there's that

I should hope so at his size. Cant get lazy though at any time and give the other team 5 pts because you didn’t box out or go get the ball.
Of course not but every player has lapses...JP has rebounded really well for us this year so I'll stick with the stats and play the odds with him going forward vs. obsessing over 2 plays.

Agree - I trust CRB has reasons that I’m missing or maybe it’s cautionary due to injury history? Whatever the reason it would be great if JP could play more minutes IMO.
I was hopeful that he was only limiting him until conference play. After limited time during Arkansas, I'd imagine it's something to do with defense. Barnes is one of the best floor raisers in the business, but I sure do wish he'd lean offense more at times. This team badly needs the production JP produces. If we would give Brown's minutes to JP, we'd be better off.

Need to play JP 25+ min...pair him Okpara and Carey then play Brown as needed off the bench to contribute and continue his development. It seems he is a bit in the doghouse for whatever reason atm...hopefully he comes around to the staff's expectations and/or the staff relents a bit recognizing we sorely need him on the court as our most efficient and dependable scorer, willing passer, rebounder and (yes) I think his defense will continue to improve.
