Ament will improve

Ament was overrated and it’s time to accept that if you’ve not already. He will probably still get picked in the first round, but it will be based on potential. He’s a decent SEC player at this stage of his career. Denying that is denying what we’ve seen ever since we started playing teams with a pulse. Him playing 30+ minutes in a game isn’t going to be a winning formula.
Agree. I think he can be somewhat productive. But he can’t shoot. Against SEC teams he won’t be a consistent double figure scorer.

9 today.

Played 32 minutes today. I’m not exaggerating when I say that number needs to be cut in half. Give Evans more minutes and give Estrella and Carey more minutes.

Gillespie/boswell/evans/carey/estrella should be the best 5 right now but JP got infected by Aments softness today.
Ament needs to sit. He is hurting this team more than helping. I don’t care what his potential supposedly is.

@johnfnkelly you were right about Ament.

I think he can be a good player in 2-3 years but right now, he’s not that good.

I’m actually starting to think he’s just a dud in general. He will get a few shots based off the idea of him alone, but I don’t see it long term at all at this point.

Being called for an 8 second violation and 5 seconds in the same game is almost impressive. He has no idea what’s going on out there.

Barnes has to remind him every game he’s a $4m NIL player we brought in to score the basketball.

He has no quick pull up from distance, and he gets eaten alive under the basket. You look at his body, and he should have forcefulness, but he just doesn’t, or at least he hasn’t found it yet. I think it would be a mistake for him to declare after this season.

In the wins over Houston and Louisville, Ament played 24 and 26 minutes respectively. He’s played 30 or more in all four of our losses with and has shot around 30% from the field cumulatively in those games.

He may be an NBA star someday (doubtful imo), but he’s not going to be a star here. We have to stop giving him star shot volume and star minutes.

Problem is, he has nothing to gain from staying in college.

It’s not going to change whether he gets drafted or not.

He’ll get drafted and NBA teams think they can fix him.

That’s it.

It's definitely not a coincidence the less he plays the better we play.

We have 2-3 fewer losses if he doesn’t play a minute. His defense is worse than Knechts on the other end.

I hope the rest of you wake up eventually.

Amari Evans is the best freshman on campus and it’s not close right now.
You already know I've come around on your Ament opinion. I've said as much. I think you were too quick to arrive at it with such conviction, but it has manifested over time with statistical support to back it up. He's just not a good fit with the current team, but none of the pieces are great fits, it seems. Probably not surprising that Evans is the best looking freshman given that he has the most college-ready bodies and played in a competitive league the past two years. If Ament had that kind of body and Evans's attitude, he'd be eating teams up, but the physical immaturity is really holding him back and then he just doesn't seem to have an alpha dog personality.

Estrella has never been what you'd call a "physical" player. He's the epitome of "finesse". There's just no toughness to the kid.

I don’t disagree, but I don’t fully agree. I do think this is an awkward roster makeup in some ways, but I also think it is less awkward than it appears due to the distribution of minutes being the mess it is. When you have a massive underperformer playing 30+ minutes, it negatively impacts every aspect of a team’s performance.

I should have been a little more patient in hindsight, but if I’m being transparent I saw the red flags vs Duke. I scoffed it up as first game jitters.

Nothing comes natural to him, and you’re right - he’s just not hungry at all out there either.

I’ve given up up the belief that Ament will step up. Won’t happen this year and not sure he’s worth the price of giving it another year if he stays in college ball. What shocks me is how Barnes thought it was worth letting this season depend so heavily on him.
I think Ament might be better coming off the bench at this point.

Former no.1 pick Zach Risacher is probably Ament’s best NBA comp. The hawks are getting ready to move on from him less than 2 years later. Not a coincidence.
They are not and said publicly. He was All-NBA rookie first team last year and had four 30 + point games to end last year. Shot 46% and 36% last year. Gosh forbid let a 20 year old continue to develop.
