Ament will improve

Boswell has not looked better. Gillespie has not looked better. They’re both struggling to make shots and handle the ball. Boswell doesn’t look like the defender he did earlier either.

I don’t see the improvement with Burg, Evans, or Estrella.
Not sure what you are watching. Evans has definitely improved. I think he’s going to be a star. Estrella has been hurt off and on and can get hot, but game plans change. Boswell can be up and down, but he certainly has improved overall this year. Pretty funny since people wrote him off at the end of last year.

Boswells shot is struggling but he played pretty good d today. His block was huge and on the big Ament 3, he saw Ament was coming back in the court and drew the defense to him with a hard dribble to the middle which freed up Ament in the corner. His 2 fts after Ament missed 3/4 were clutch too. Thats net 7 points our way in about 5 seconds.
There’s a lot more that goes into basketball than just shooting well.

With some of the early season plays I thought Boswell would continue to advance offensively. He hasn’t. Sorry, but he isn’t a 25 minute guy, yet here we are. That lack is wearing the most on Gillespie. He is just zapped: He has too much on him and is wearing down. His shot is gone. This is primarily on Boswell, as there’s no one else to take the load.

Boswell was going to be riding the bench according to most of our fans before the season. He’s been generally much improved. But he’s still a sophomore and needs to refine his offensive game more. It’s more on the staff for not getting a shooting guard than on Boswell himself. And…I know they tried. Ironically, I think Issac McNeely might have had a bigger role at UT because that’s what we needed. Would take 11 points and 38% from 3 from him.

That was the issue though. Boozer is really not a typical freshman, even a great one. The first 5 freshmen that will be taken in the draft are elite and could all be #1 picks (or close) in other draft years.

I just don’t understand why some can’t use some patience. Anyone that has watched a bunch of college basketball could see the talent and potential. I was merely asking for patience and even said that some are getting caught up in what the other freshmen are doing. In a regular year, Ament would have gotten more publicity.

I don’t care about going back in time, but people did go overboard with the criticism.
I agree that especially after some losses some of the typical LofM types brought their hyper critical critiques. There were a bunch of others who IMO were expressing valid concerns about Nate’s poor performances and questioning whether his physical development would come fast enough this season for him to be impactful in the SEC. Those were very valid points. Thankfully, his body matured more and he’s developed into a great player for us.

Agreeing this is an usually strong top of the freshmen class, but for even an average season Nate was not performing as the highest ever rated recruit to Tennessee.

There wasn’t a more disparaged player on our roster starting the season than Boswell.

He also locked up Pettiford on a key possession in the 2nd half run where he wouldn't allow him to get to the paint and then forced a challenged 3 that missed rim and resulted in a shot clock violation.

regardless of what happened, we have to have Boswell step up. I’d like to see Evans get more of those minutes. Heck, if Boswell could just run point and let Gillespie play off ball. They do it occasionally, but the offense stalls. We don’t need 20 points. We need some penetration, distribution and get 6-8 points.

I can understand why many of you remember different things than I remember. Boswell was getting a lot more steals back in November and December. He was even hitting his shots better.

People who write someone else off do not understand basketball. Anyone can become a great shooter and a solid defender if they work diligently. Matter of fact, if you make it to college where you can access facilities at any time and receive one on one coaching by elite coaches, you have no excuse not to be a great shooter.

I’m not surprised if a players steals per game goes down as the schedule gets more difficult, SEC play and likely less gambling, but I’d also be surprised if it’s a measurable number for Boswell. Foul trouble can also affect that number.
I also don’t recall him shooting a midrange earlier in the year.
As far as practicing insuring being a great shooter, I definitely don’t agree. Some players will not be great in game shooters no matter what. Anybody can knock em down in practice. Hell I can go out now and hit 8/10 3s in my driveway because I’ve always been able to shoot but probably can’t make it up and down the court twice without a heart attack. Mental aspect is more important imo. Do you shoot knowing the ball is going in, or are you shooting hoping it goes in or aiming. If it was as simple as practicing, D1 players wouldn’t miss. Jakobi is ice cold from 3 and it’s not because he’s not practicing.

I agree with most. The only thing I will say is that by my calculation, Ament was averaging 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game after the Texas game (first 15 games). Tobias Harris averaged 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds his entire first year. Harris averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds through 15 games. The numbers aren't far off, and Harris was listed at 6'8" and 226. Ament is 6"10" and just over 200.

Ament has improved a bunch, and Harris just stayed flat to end the season.
