Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

I wouldn't bet on Shaka coming to Knoxville, but it's not nearly as far-fetched as people make it out to be. UT has some of the best fan support in the nation. That's important, because it means that we can potentially pay out one of the highest salaries and have potential to be a top 10 program consistently.

It's easy to say that there are other schools with bigger reputations (Kentucky, Duke, etc), but Duke wasn't Duke before Coach K. Most of the major college bball programs have been built up by one great coach that stayed there 15+ years (Duke, Syracuse, Arizona, Florida, etc).

Shaka Smart could come to Knoxville and turn UT into a superpower. UT has the resources, the recruiting base, and everything to make it possible. It just needs the right coach.

None of this is to say that I think he's coming here, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. In a sense, Shaka would be better off at UT building his own legacy, rather than going somewhere like UCLA, where he has to live up to someone else's.

Heard an intersting name on the radio this morning and I wanted to throw it out to VN and see what you guys thought. Any one remember Mike Davis? He coached at Indiana and UAB, and is currently coaching at Texas Southern which made the first round of the Tourney this year.

Oh and one other bit of information, he played at BAMA! :)

What about Herb Sendek of Arizona State. He guided the Sun Devils to the NCAA Second round this season.

"Smart has been married to Maya Payne, a professional writer and an alumna of both Harvard University and Northwestern University, since 2006. Their child, Zora Sanae Smart, was born on September 25, 2011."

Can't find where she is a professor or anything? Also he was an assistant at Florida in 2008-2009 I believe so he has spent a year in the SEC before he started his HCing career.

Shaka would be an absolute home run if we got him, and a bargain even at $3 million. If he fills up TB arena with his up tempo style, excellent sideline coaching, and quality recruiting, he will easily bring in more money than his salary.

Would love to see his "havoc" defense here!

Please let this be the guy!

Yea, I started drinking early today as well...

We could let Steven Pearl be his asst. Wait, does he have availability left? White Lebron IMO

Seriously??? Let's hire Steven Pearl, Dane bradshaw as the all heart coach and Aaron.Green.an assistant coach

Living in St. Louis, I have gotten a really good sense of Jim Crews. He's a Bob Knight disciple. He's a good coach, and really knows how to get the players to play for him. He's conscientious in the community and a generally affable guy. If Tennessee hired him, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

But, I think a younger guy with a longer, brighter future would be preferable by far.

He has got to understand that he has hit his ceiling at vcu. At UT he could build a powerhouse and be worshipped like Butch Jones

The real question is, "Will UT pay a basketball coach something comparable to or more than Butch?"

I don't think so.

Shaka Smart would kill it at UT. Would excite the fanbase, keep recruits, interest recruits for 2015, etc. Total package. If he is interested, UT should give him what it takes. Worth every penny.
