Time to Pay up

Bet Danny White has this under control. He should also be the AD of the year. I only fear losing them in a package deal down the road if we are not fair with both. Until then just chill. Bet he has already calculated the additional revenue from all the sellouts this season.

I have faith that Danny White is going to take care of Heupel. I'm sure its already a conversation that is going on because that is the world we live in- if you are winning in college football you are getting a raise, if you are losing you are getting fired.

I definitely believe a raise and extension are warranted but I am concerned about continuity of staff with Golesh leaving. While everyone wants to point out that this is Heupel’s offense; Golesh was at the least a very well liked and respected presence as well as a solid recruiter. I don’t expect the train goes off the rails; just that we don’t know what we don’t know… Sometimes, coaches move on without skipping a beat after a departure while in other instances you really come to understand how vital an assistant was to your team’s success. There just isn’t enough track record with Heupel to know for sure. I expect a modest contract bump and extension this year.

When we go 7-5 or 5-7 next year and Josh the Hoopla is sitting on a 90 million dollar contract for 10 years it will look brilliant.
Of course had we beaten SC i would think differently.
Trash take after trash take. We could easily wind up going 7-5 or 8-4 next year. You don’t take a team that was facing the freaking death penalty under cornbread and flip them to 10-2 without being a next level coach. We need to lock Heup in and back the brinks truck up to his house. Fans need to shut the hell up and support the team and culture or go back to where you were two years ago, not paying attention to Tennessee football.

Re Fulmer and coach cut… two different eras with his two stints on the hill vs when he wasn’t here.

I worry that Tennessee will wind up being stingy and Coach Heupel will be tempted away sometime down the road.

Fulmer and Cutcliffe are just one of many examples. Look at what has happened to Alabama, Clemson and LSU after winning titles and losing coordinators… It is tough to win in CFB. It’s even more difficult to sustain especially when everyone is taking pieces. With the changes we are seeing just with the transfer portal and NIL; I don’t know that you can afford to throw big money and long contracts to a guy that doesn’t have an extensive track record. I love what Heupel has done so far but things can change in a hurry…

I just learned Freeze is back in the SEC via this thread. Great! Wonderful! Can we just make this conference anymore of a gauntlet through hell?

Thank God we are going to 12 team play off.

Oh, and yes pay CJH. It’s clear he can coach and our long term answer. Anyone complaining about an Orange bowl in year two is just stupid. The man is a top tier coach.

I would if I’d spent the last two years recruiting a bunch of kids to play for me. I’d probably also prefer not to start another rebuild if I didn’t have to do so.

You’re just throwing out hypotheticals, though. The market is not currently valuing Heupel at nine million a year.
So by your statement you feel there are 10 coaches in the SEC alone worth more than heupel and by that logic that could have rebuilt TN faster????

I am not worried one bit about all this. Our AD and Heupel get along well. Heupel is going to be compensated well. I am sure they have talked about all this way before now. Heupel is going to be taken care of. GBO

With the latest addition of Hugh Freeze to the SEC, Heupel is way under paid for what he has done in 2 short years. We are no longer hoping or thinking maybe he can bring us back to top 10 football and the opportunity to compete with the elite, he has done it. I think he should be around the $7m/year mark and room to grow once he can get us in the final 4 and SEC championship(s). What does VN think is a number to keep away the "hawks" from swooping in to grab him away?

7 to 7.5 million a year for Heupel seems reasonable.

I mean if theirs no obligation to do it, I would wait until the end of next year before I hand out a huge contract. If huep shows he can figure it out next year without his oc and a different qb then hooker then he will get paid. No need to be nice, we’ve seen what our other coaches has done with a big check. What happens if we come out next season n go 7-5 and everybody is wishing we didn’t pay??
If we Can wait one more year I would.

Well I’ve said about ten times now I don’t think we need to base his pay on what bad football programs are doing.

We’re not going to drop to that level next year. The SC game was an outlier and people are putting too much weight on that game. Heupel needs 8 mil and the staff needs a raise.

I assure you Danny White is in the process of updated a new contract now.

He will wait until then off season to present it because the bowl game outcome isn’t known yet.

I’m sure if that’s a win the contract numbers increase even more.
