Thoughts after game 1?

I was hoping for more from the defense. Can’t rate the Dbacks because the pass rush was weak. The running backs are too small for SEC play. They will not open the pass with the run it will be the opposite. The first team offense looked powerful as expected. I think they were very vanilla working mostly on basics.

And? It’s a junior high team. This concern over not having a power back is not a novel thought. And nothing has changed.

but seriously what did you want them to do to that “junior high” team?

Minus that last Shuler debacle they ran for 236 at 4.7, with Wright averaging 6.8 per.

Tennessee only punted twice, only had 6 penalties, had several made 3rd down runs, had multiple goal line made runs………..isn’t that what they are supposed to do?

Not saying “hey there’s nothing to be concerned about.” However the running game was there…….especially with the ones and two’s. There was definitely power “when needed”………but this really isn’t a “power” team.

Just not too sure we can draw too many conclusions…….especially negative ones from a 59-10 shellacking.

TOP was a huge concern…..it was almost dead even.

“JR high team” or not Tennessee did what they should have done……and in the past…….something they didn’t always do, they took care of business. Heck it was 45-0 (I think) before they even gave up a score. They playing with one’s Tennessee playing with twos and threes.

We will all know a lot more after the Pitt game.

Let me get this straight. This is JWT first time playing in a college game. He makes a mistake and all of a sudden it’s a concern and he has ball security issues? Jesus Christ. Some of you just actively look for something to complain about.

Maybe I should have said this is a “potential” problem. Again, this one is probably on the quarterback but either way the mesh point is the absolute first thing these guys need to get right in order to run this offense.

Are you trying to say Tennessee is on the same level as Georgia?

Horrible analogy
I don't think you got what he was saying. There are some posters on this site, they know who they are that will complain if we aren't video game like on stats. The odds makers, who steal people's money based on being "experts", only predicted we would win by 39 I believe. When was the last time, prior to CJH, that we covered the spread. They played almost everyone on the sideline and used it as a scrimmage. Had the 1st or 2nd team stayed in the whole game, we would have broken triple digits. We had the 5th string QB in the game on the last drive. This defense is going to give up more stats than even I am comfortable with just because of the sheer numbers of snaps they see.

We weren’t supposed to beat Ball St by 49 and we did. We weren’t supposed to beat Missouri by 38. We did. We weren’t supposed to beat South Carolina by 25. We did.
When you exceed the spread by 2 TDs, I’d say it’s a good night, regardless of opponent. Clean up the little things, and we beat Pitt by double digits. It’s gonna be a good year!

I suspect the defense was somewhat vanilla tonight as well, although it is concerning the lack of pressure from the defensive line. Additionally, the secondary looked rough defending the short routes. Warden Burrell has a ton of experience but looked just as bad as he did against Georgia state. I thought second team guys in defense played with better effort in the 3rd quarter.

Offensively I thought we looked just fine. Joe looked like he has made some progress and I thought he looked a step faster with his scrambling ability and also ran like he was 6’6 245.

The D was fine. We don’t need to show all our wrinkles in a game like last night’s. By most media accounts, defense was much improved in the off season.

More pass rush and closer coverage on the wide receivers. Overall not to bad of a first game against a pancake team.

Not sure why the running backs are too small for SEC play. Small is at 213 this year. Georgia's returning leading rusher is 210. Alabama's returning leader is 200 and the heaviest RB on their roster is 214. Texas A&M's returning leader is 185. Ole Miss's returning leader is 200. Florida's returning leader is 218. Missouri's leading rusher last night weighs 206, the leading carry guy weighs 215. South Carolina's returning leader weighs 205 and their second leading returning guy weighs 212. Auburn's 1100 yard top returning guy is 213, same as Small.

The list goes on and on. Our RB room is similar in size to most of the SEC's rb room. The vast majority of RBs in the league fall between 5'9-6'1" and 190-215lbs.

Milton got over his initial jitters and threw a 50-yd rope for a TD. Might be the best backup QB in the SEC. I think we’ll have situational pkgs for him.

Bru is big-time. Probably our best athlete on O. Can catch and knows what to do with the ball. It will be lit watching him get better every week. Pitt will be focused on CT so look for a big breakout game from Bru.

Beasley was a beast on D and he can actually TACKLE.

We made a TON of substitutions on both sides of the ball with very little drop off in play. Credit to player development and S&C.

Clearly our OL needs to mesh and we’ve got to find the right formula in the secondary. Got to have better perimeter play. Gave up too many big chunks of yardage.

Shaky start in places but our coaches have enough film now to lock it down before Pitt.

Do yall really think these Coaches was showing our Best Team last night?? If so you are delusional! We was playing Ball St for God's sake, The whole game plan was to use NOTHING more than basics (Which they did) and we still Won by 49! I'd bet what I have that our Defense is better than what was shown he$$ I'd bet the whole Team is better than what was Shown. Very vanilla on both sides and it was meant to be that way. We beat Pitt next week by 14!
