The Weightlifters Thread

I'm gonna have to work my butt off at the gym tomorrow thanks to the people at the gym that I went out with tonight. I haven't been since Tuesday morning. Ugh. Slacking.

A question for you meatheads:
A long while back I used to always have a problem with my left side getting stuck, almost just giving out, while benching. Since I got back into lifting last fall I hadn't had that problem and was making constant gains every week (linear program, increasing weight every workout that you perform a lift). That was up until a couple of weeks ago. I increased weight as scheduled and got stuck. I have had problems hitting reps due to fatigue but never due to my left side just giving up like it used to. Since then its been a problem every day that I've benched, even on weights I hadn't had a problem with in the weeks prior.

Have any of you ever experienced anything similar? I feel like its almost a mental problem, and not a strength one. Sort of like I'm expecting myself to get stuck, so I do.

Take a week off & then mix up your bench routine for a couple weeks.

More than likely you're out of alignment. Usually a rib when it affects your bench. Hang like you're going to do a pull up, arms at shoulder length, facing a mirror, and see if your head is a lot closer to one side.

A good masseuse can fix it.

I don't think its that I went up in weight too quickly. The previous workout I didn't have a problem then added 5 lbs the next workout and no such luck.

You may be on to something about a massage though. Earlier today I was saying something about needing a good massage.

You hit a plateau, it happens. Take a week off, mix up your workout a little, hit it a little harder, eat more &/or add some supps like creatine & whey. A preworkout supp might help as well.

Anybody try Ravage? I let the guy at GNC talk me into it.

No not gnc! That place is a ripoff. Try an online spot like dpsnutrition or if you buy from a retailer I would recommend vitamin shoppe.

It's not all that bad with the gold card. I have ordered from DPS, but I can get 73 scoops of Dymatize for $30 at GNC so I go there.

You talkin protein or creatine? If protein IMO Optimum Nutrition is the best. I've tried every creatine there is & the best is plain creatine mono. The best of that has been EAS phosphagen. Yes it's better than any creapure or any other filler loaded, 15 serving tub of crap IMO. Only other thing you need is a pre workout supp & that's it. Take the creatine mono & preworkout supp before & the creatine mono & protein after.

Wait?! You take the pre-workout supplements BEFORE you work out? :)

Ask the guy at GNC.

In all honesty with a pre-workout supplement and two servings of creatine it sounds to me like you are overdoing it. I've heard 3-5 grams per day gives you max utility. How much are you getting?

What is everyone's opinion on this?

The amount of creatine in preworkout supps is negligible. When you take 5g of creatine chances are your body isn't gonna absorb 100% of it. When I'm taking creatine I may take 20g spread throughout the day with 1 serving before & 1 serving after a workout. Body weight plays a role in it too. The bigger you are the more you need.

I don't even use creatine all that much. Maybe I'll cycle it 1 month out of 3 or so. I don't like how I look with all the water weight and I think there's diminishing returns over time with creatine.

Creatine isn't a steroid. The muscle you gain is the muscle you keep. The water retention is in your muscles so they look a bit fuller. If you only take creatine a month don't even bother. It takes a few weeks before it kicks in good & you're quitting before you get any real benefit from it.

Creatine boosts energy and ability to do more reps, not recovery. Its not even close to a steroid. And it takes about 5 days for your body to load up on it before you even start to see results.

KreAlkalyn is really making some strides, its being put into more and more cocktails. The science behind it is solid, but like many supplements there is no long term studies to conclusively determine efficacy. (no studies because no one wants to spend the money since 90%+ of supplements are trial and error.)
