The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Why does it seem like since Pope has taken over, every time we play them they seem to play out of their minds?
I don’t get it either. The only thing I can think of is Tennessee’s is favored and has the better team. As such Kentucky plays more relaxed. Tennessee used to do it to Kentucky all the time. I can remember average Tennessee blowing out some very good Kentucky teams.

We’ve been lucky to have Rick Barnes and it will be a sad day when HE decides to hang it up. It will not be easy to replace him. This team might be the one that pushes him to go. Got to be frustrating as this team is big and talented. Just doesn’t have the character and fight (and guard play) that we’re used to seeing. Maybe by the end of the year but not at the moment.

It has nothing to do with him or his style. It just isn’t possible to win one here.
Sure it’s possible. Difficult? Yes. If Indiana can win a natty in football, we can win one in basketball. Probably won’t be Barnes, but he’s put this program on good footing and it will be an attractive opening for the next coach. If university leadership and donors align, anything’s possible

We had Bruce Pearl and Rick Barnes for 17 combined years and never sniffed a title.

It’s never happening.

It is possible. It's just as possible at Tennessee as it was for Alabama and Auburn to reach the Final Four and Florida to win it all.

I think through his career,Barnes has a hard-nose defensive style that isn't something that works well with making deep tournament runs. Players become exhausted. I'm amazed at the previous two Elite Eight runs.

I keep getting the sense this is Ricks final dance. I hope not, because I'm not sure this season is going to turn out very well and he deserves to go out on a good note.
I thought he should have retired when ZZ finished his career. I'm NOT saying I wished for him too, but I was afraid it would never be the same ... he and ZZ are super close. He's "like a son" and he's "like a father" and that's impossible to replace. Plus, ZZ is just one of those special players we're all blessed to get to witness.

Rick and Pearl have demonstrated that UT is a legit platform for high level success in basketball. I appreciate all the Barnes has done, but I’m looking forward to the next chapter, which is coming sooner rather than later.

And Florida won it back to back during the Pearl years with two starters from Tennessee, Corey Brewer (Portland) and Lee Humphrey (Maryville)

Barnes should take a pay cut to make $1m next season and use current NIL number plus the $6m pay cut and just go all out in the portal this offseason for one final season to make a run at a natty. lol.

Well he thought he was getting Kevin Durant-lite and that didn’t work out so great.

I do wonder if some of these coaches are secretly funding their own rosters. Is that possibly the cheating that Danny White was hinting about recently?

Ament had played well. The idea that he has somewhat been anything close to a bust is foolish.

It was criminal how many single possessions Gillespie had down the stretch today where the hot hand was Ament getting to the basket or drawing fouls was consistent.

I am just sick and tired of Barnes snatching somebody out of the game. Even his hollering at his players is old with me. You can try to give some teaching without berating every time. I played under Gene Bartow at Memphis State and he was such a teacher without berating. I just don't get it. Give all the love you want to Barnes but today was one of the worst losses I have witnessed. I am sure Barnes is a HOF coach but just hanging your hat on defense sometimes doesn't cut it. I know he plays Boswell because he tries to play defense but 27 minutes from him today didn't do anything. Evans in my opinion has all the tools and plays just as hard as Boswell but Barnes is just a stubborn coach.

He’s not a bust and he is showing improvement. But in the NIL era when you pay a guy multimillions for him to come play one season, he should carry your team on his shoulders. Ament is not close to being able to do that.
