The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Thanks Freak.
I'll start with my two cents...
I absolutely love CRB and what he's done for Tennessee, but the bill of goods we bought from Texas has proven true.

Great recruiter, good coach, teams excel during the season, doesn't go very deep in the tournaments.

Do we accept that and let him coach here as long as he maintains the current standard?
Or is it time to consider the next coach?
STAY! This team has been through a lot of trash before Barnes came along. We finally have a winning coach and there is always a thread about him retiring.

Very impressed with the way this team has won so far and how they have shown up.

Zero criticism and very proud of them.

Should not have won that game and give credit to Barnes for a great game plan and the players executing it.
I’m going to respectfully disagree agree on your statement that we should not have won that game. We had the better team than Virginia if you look at the individual pieces. Our problem all season has been turnovers keeping us from playing to our full potential. Until we got sloppy with the ball late in the game it felt like Virginia was lucky to be keeping it close. Take away 3-4 of those silly turnovers and we win that one by double digits. JMO

We started to squander it late like we’ve done multiple times this year. Painful to watch, we all could feel it slipping. However, we finally pulled our heads out of rear, made a couple of tough buckets, and had some great stands on D. Gritty win

The late mental breakdowns and turnovers are maddening. How in the hell we advanced to the S16 with that level of nonsense is still a head scratcher. Kobi seems to go into some sort of mental state. He kept dribbling the ball over to the right by the Tennessee bench and getting stuck. We were extremely fortunate with some of the calls.

Which calls specifically?

I said this often last year in the baseball section without obviously knowing anything about Tony V leaving for the majors like he ended up doing, but my advice to everyone is don't be someone who only realizes you're in the good old days when they're gone. With the baseball team it was appreciating that we'd made it at least to the supers 4 straight years at the time(ended up making it 5 straight years when the season was said and done), and how we'd have all killed for a single supers appearance before Vitello got there. Expecting/wanting national championships is fine, but don't let it cloud over the rest of the success the team is having.

This basketball team has never seen the success it has under Barnes. As incredible of a coach as Pearl was, he didn't come anywhere near this run we're on in terms of consistency. Don't forget to enjoy it while it's happening, because there's not anything even close to a guarantee that we'll ever see it again. Hopefully whoever replaces Barnes when he does retire does a great job too, but history has shown us it ain't super likely. Sweet 16s and especially elite 8s are an absolute rarity for this program. Enjoy them when we get them.
