Someone on another board mentioned Justin Lamson from Montana St. Brief look showed good stats and he's a runner, too. Oak Ridge kid I think I saw...okay, Oak Ridge, CA, but a sign is a sign, right? Plus, he's had stops at Syracuse and Stanford.![]()
Both Murray and Young were extremely gifted and extremely highly rated throughout high school and college despite their size. They have been extremely sought after by lots of coaches and teams since high school.Bryce Young was 5'10 and probably 190-200 lbs and he dominated college football. Kyler Murray same except he had wheels. Doesn't matter about how they do in NFL.
from what I've seen this season his biggest asset is that he seems to process what is happening in front of him very quickly. He goes through all his read fast. I think he's quicker than people give him credit for, but even when he break contain he keeps his eyes down field. He only runs when he has toDickens is 5'11" and 180...and folks on here are up in arms sayin G Mac is too small. Wait until this guy shows up.
I like the stats, not from a production perspective, but to throw 46/46 in ANY game and to have that many TDs with only 2 INTs says A TON about his decision making.
Will that carry over to the system and the pressure of the SEC - worked out for Joey last year, but wouldn't mind finding out.
No idea, but I'm not that concerned about the height at least. From his highlights, he can get the ball out quick, he moves around well, and he's accurate given his completion %. People were very concerned about Joey's arm strength as well, and that didn't end up being a major concern.Do you think this young man is as talented? Fine.
It's the size and I'm not convinced he's got SEC speed but Heupel can see a lot more film than me. I'm sure his name has come up and since he's close someone from the staff may have been up to WCU for a game or two.No idea, but I'm not that concerned about the height at least. Dickens hasn't had that kind of attention to his gifts out of high school nor now transferring in college.
I'm not sure that betting everyone has been wrong who has looked at him over several years and passed on him is a good move. Could he work out? Yes. The odds aren't there that he's somehow become Bryce Young or Kyler Murray.
people miss on QBs all the time. Its probably the most difficult position in sports to scout. For every Kyler Murray or Bryce Young who succeeds in college there are 5 or 6 5 stars every year who flame out despite having all the physical attributes one looks for in the position. In the same way, lots of guys who fly under the radar every year are extremely successful. The error rate on QB scouting is really really high. Both Murray and Young were extremely gifted and extremely highly rated throughout high school and college despite their size. I believe Heupel has access to a lot better resources AND has a lot more talent than me to pick a QB. His work with Joey A (and Joey A's hard work too) was great to watch this year. He deserves a lot of credit for not overwhelming Joey A and getting the most out of him.I wasn't clear in my post before but I didn't mean to convey that I believe he is a special talent or anywhere close to either of those two but more about the comment on him being too short to play in the league.
Unlike most of VN coaches, I actually believe Heupel and other evaluators know what they're doing.
My point is both will get snapped in half because we don’t have the OL to protect them. If they go after this Taron guy, I hope he can run and scramble like Barry Sanders behind the Lions OL.Gmac is also a lot taller, that makes a huge difference with weight. At Gmac height he should at least be 220 lbs
I couldn't agree more. Well said.I believe Heupel has access to a lot better resources AND has a lot more talent than me to pick a QB. It's just easier if you start with a really gifted kid and I think that's what made Heupel go after Milton. Extremely gifted but he never quite "got it" at MI and Heupel thought he could perhaps transform him. He did okay with Milton but there's way more gifts there than product being delivered on the field.
He had Hooker and the Hooker of VT was not the Hooker of UT so I have to think Heupel (and Hooker's hard work) made a lot of difference.
We are extremely lucky to have Josh Heupel and, it's just me, I hope we're extremely lucky and some gifted QB makes a last minute dive in the portal and lands in Neyland. If not, I trust Heupel to get the most out of a lesser gifted QB.
