Some of our stud players are delusional..

I love Kelly, but I will absolutely amazed if he gets drafted at all.

Agreed. It seems like most of the mock drafts don't even have Kelly listed or in the top 15 at his position (it seems to be a particularly deep rb class this year). Hope he works out well and it works out for him!

Anybody know if Malone's money is guaranteed? 4th rounders are where they separate guaranteed or not usually. $3 million over 4 years, about $750 k per year. Agent takes 6% right off the top, down to $705k, Ohio and most of the states he travels to as a player have state and local taxes, some like NY and Cali higher than you can believe, let's round and say 8%, he's down around $645K, feds take, let's round and be generous, new federal tax laws in place, let's round and say his rate is 30%, he's down to about $420k unguaranteed money per year until someone can prove his $s are guaranteed being a fourth rounder. That's not even getting into his housing and living expenses in Cincinnati if that is not his primary place to live. Let's be conservative, say he spends $20K per year on that. Let's say he is blessed stays healthy all four years and his contract pays out all the way but ends his career there, new meat comes in to the grinder every year especially at the 4th round talent level. 4 years at $400k per year is $1.6 million is his to pocket at the age of 25. Ready to spend the rest of your life from age 25 to 65 on that? $1.6 million doing simple division over 40 years comes out to $40k per year. Ready to spend most of your life making $40 k per year as a non college grad? Good luck with that.

You are correct EXCEPT I have one comment. Your last comment about $40k per year as a non college grad!!!
I personally know hundreds of people who currently are non college grads that make more money than college grads.
Consider a knucklehead who graduates with a degree that is not worth the paper it is written on and they end up being managers at a book store or at McDonalds or even a high school teacher.
Then consider those who work at UPS as a delivery driver at $35 per hour or as a trailer truck driver for UPS at $40 per hour. They are none college graduates and earn more than some college grads.
Also, consider someone who has a certificate as an electrician or plumber or a small business owner. They earn more than your local music teacher or McD. manager or your local college grad who is a small town police officer.
Heck I even know some Master Sergeants in the military that earn more than college grads.

Just trying to mention that a college degree does not equate in to a good paying job................

There's also the other side of the equation: how much money will NFL teams be offering if this season's "anti-protest" decline in viewership continues?

IMHO professional football has peaked. Revenues will continue to fall. The next TV contract may be half what the current one is.

Kids may be being advised to get themselves to the table while there's still money on it.

NFL pay will still be comprobable to what it currently is. T.V. proceeds will give them the bulk of the money...

Malone did just fine. he was activated several times, made $3m this year. can't argue with that at all.

4th round picks don't make $3mil a yr. His $3mil contract is for 4 yrs IF he makes the team all four yrs.

I totally agree with your point about non college grads. My issue is the Malones of the NFL (and lower draft picks etc) for the most part don't have a lot of those skills as much time and energy has been put in place to play pro sports. The real thing is we have LOTS of VN posters that to my mind think Malone is making big money. In the cosmic scheme of a person's lifetime, not so much. It's why any one of us we if choose to can buy Superbowl and various championship rings on the open market. Not everybody, especially the NFL where most of the $s to players is not guaranteed like it is in MLB and the NBA, ends up ok financially, frequently most do not do well. THAT is why if you're not a superstar getting superstar guaranteed $s, kids and their families really need to think about it and the long term. I do get it though, our DQ night manager segment here on VN handling that night shift in Copper Basin, $40K per year seems like a good deal, snatch it up youngster, make that big money! LOL

You’re way off.

Kelly said he would meet with Coach Pruitt after Pruitt was hired to discuss his future with is team...Kelly’s NFL combine numbers don’t figure to change much with another year at the college level, and he has proven himself a workhorse back this season...possibly the same analysis for Gaulden, so they’re going.

Wish them well, would have been an asset to have had them both back, but I get it.

After what they went through this past season, losing in historic proportions, injuries claiming teammates like a plague, and the unknowns of an incoming coaching staff, I don’t blame them for leaving for an opportunity to make bank.
Good luck to them all.

i think Gaulden gets drafted and makes a roster.

Kelly is riskier. lot's of RB's out there to choose from, and i don't know that he brings anything to the table that really separates himself from enough of the 20+ backs that will be eligible. and i think he's really good. that's just not enough to move the meter imo. late round pick imo at best.

Malone did just fine. he was activated several times, made $3m this year. can't argue with that at all.

This above sums it up correctly. John Kelly is declaring in a year filled with stud running backs. He is really good and has some impressive tape already. I just believe he would have bettered his draft pick by another year with some great stats. I get that RB's have a shelf life, but c'mon y'all...he isn't 30 years old yet. Plus saving your body may actually be the case if he goes undrafted or goes in a really late round (6th).

I believe Gaulden goes 4-5th round.

Just my 2cents worth...

Guys,

First, it was John Kelly to declare. Now, Gaulden has decided to forgo his Senior season and enter the NFL draft. Of course, they were really good players, but what makes them think they are NFL material this early? I mean come on, Kelly isn't Sony Michel and Nick Chubb and Gaulden isn't some Micah Fitzpatrick. They both would have benefited greatly by staying and developing another year. I know its a new staff, bad season, not much hope this year, and families involved, but Im sorry they are sadly mistaken if they think they are good enough to come out their Junior years.

Same exact thing went for Josh Malone.

Your thoughts? Am I way off here? Agree?

Not as much as the VolNation members.....

Hard to say...it really depends on where their hearts are...if they are aren't really into taking classes then maybe it's time for them to focus on getting ready for their shot...

They will need great showings at combines and even with a great showing Kelly probably won't get drafted. But that could work to his advantage since he could then sign with a team where he might be a good fit...

I actually think they will do well in the NFL. Kelly IMO will find a similar role as Kamara did with the Saints, and Gaulden's tackling ability will land him a good spot. Won't be surprised if they both excel.

O hope they both do...

I think Kelly is a sixth or seventh round draft pick in the 2018 draft while Gaulden goes in the third or fourth round.

One thing I don't think has been mentioned that I heard yesterday from Brent Hubbs...

Gaulden, had he stayed, would have been with his 3rd position coach in three seasons.

He didn't make 3 million this year. Nowhere near it

At the very least, if he needed income they'd put it in a conservative investment so he could live off the earnings perpetually while he figured things out.

It's comical to paint a late 20-something with $1.6 million as a failure who should've played an extra year of college football.

Your strawman of failure is an epic failure. No one using my name has indicated Malone is a failure. What my attempt was to assist posters here, that $1.6 million over 40 years is not all that much money for an NFL player who may be retired from the league at the age of 25. There's nothing to be said about how a player would invest their money, some kids buy cars and thots, others invest it for the long term. YOU are the one proposing how that money is laid out I'm just bringing you the fact $1.6 million over forty years is about what a night manager at DQ can pull down, $40K per year. It's why you can find former NFL players all across the US selling used cars to roofing houses on their way to their golden retirement years. Just stop the provincial nonsense and thinking of a million dollars is a gold mine, lots of people probably most people make over a million dollars during their entire work life.

They may have felt that the new regime wasn't exactly what fit them. I don't like leaving early, but I can't fault them for doing it.

2Hs (one of best friends in the world is nicknamed 2Hs) I don't fault them for leaving if they've gotten good counsel and are maximizing the money on the table. Where I depart from some here on VN is the idea that any kid going to the NFL, especially those in the 4th round or later wher the money is not often guaranteed, has hit the mother lode. Granted kids going in to the first and second rounds, do. Kids later than that depending on contract, position played, overall general health often do not over an individual lifetime. The "go get that money" attitude is why you see some former NFL players huckstering used cars in Boulder City, Nevada at the wonderful age of 45.
