Anybody know if Malone's money is guaranteed? 4th rounders are where they separate guaranteed or not usually. $3 million over 4 years, about $750 k per year. Agent takes 6% right off the top, down to $705k, Ohio and most of the states he travels to as a player have state and local taxes, some like NY and Cali higher than you can believe, let's round and say 8%, he's down around $645K, feds take, let's round and be generous, new federal tax laws in place, let's round and say his rate is 30%, he's down to about $420k unguaranteed money per year until someone can prove his $s are guaranteed being a fourth rounder. That's not even getting into his housing and living expenses in Cincinnati if that is not his primary place to live. Let's be conservative, say he spends $20K per year on that. Let's say he is blessed stays healthy all four years and his contract pays out all the way but ends his career there, new meat comes in to the grinder every year especially at the 4th round talent level. 4 years at $400k per year is $1.6 million is his to pocket at the age of 25. Ready to spend the rest of your life from age 25 to 65 on that? $1.6 million doing simple division over 40 years comes out to $40k per year. Ready to spend most of your life making $40 k per year as a non college grad? Good luck with that.
There's also the other side of the equation: how much money will NFL teams be offering if this season's "anti-protest" decline in viewership continues?
IMHO professional football has peaked. Revenues will continue to fall. The next TV contract may be half what the current one is.
Kids may be being advised to get themselves to the table while there's still money on it.
You are correct EXCEPT I have one comment. Your last comment about $40k per year as a non college grad!!!
I personally know hundreds of people who currently are non college grads that make more money than college grads.
Consider a knucklehead who graduates with a degree that is not worth the paper it is written on and they end up being managers at a book store or at McDonalds or even a high school teacher.
Then consider those who work at UPS as a delivery driver at $35 per hour or as a trailer truck driver for UPS at $40 per hour. They are none college graduates and earn more than some college grads.
Also, consider someone who has a certificate as an electrician or plumber or a small business owner. They earn more than your local music teacher or McD. manager or your local college grad who is a small town police officer.
Heck I even know some Master Sergeants in the military that earn more than college grads.
Just trying to mention that a college degree does not equate in to a good paying job................
Youre way off.
i think Gaulden gets drafted and makes a roster.
Kelly is riskier. lot's of RB's out there to choose from, and i don't know that he brings anything to the table that really separates himself from enough of the 20+ backs that will be eligible. and i think he's really good. that's just not enough to move the meter imo. late round pick imo at best.
Malone did just fine. he was activated several times, made $3m this year. can't argue with that at all.
Guys,
First, it was John Kelly to declare. Now, Gaulden has decided to forgo his Senior season and enter the NFL draft. Of course, they were really good players, but what makes them think they are NFL material this early? I mean come on, Kelly isn't Sony Michel and Nick Chubb and Gaulden isn't some Micah Fitzpatrick. They both would have benefited greatly by staying and developing another year. I know its a new staff, bad season, not much hope this year, and families involved, but Im sorry they are sadly mistaken if they think they are good enough to come out their Junior years.
Same exact thing went for Josh Malone.
Your thoughts? Am I way off here? Agree?

At the very least, if he needed income they'd put it in a conservative investment so he could live off the earnings perpetually while he figured things out.
It's comical to paint a late 20-something with $1.6 million as a failure who should've played an extra year of college football.
They may have felt that the new regime wasn't exactly what fit them. I don't like leaving early, but I can't fault them for doing it.
