What a player did in HS doesn't mean a thing once they step on the court in college. Brown is raw and even Barnes has indicated that. That's no knock on him, he's full of potential. But his development needs to be rapid because the Vols have to get better production down low next season (and everywhere else too). Based on what we saw this year, I'd be searching the portal for a major contributor in the post and let Brown continue to develop off the bench next year. He's just not ready to be "the guy" in my opinion. Estrella is the starter at 5 but we really need a 4 that is prime time ready.Diamonds in the rough aren’t #1 player in the state, top 15 in the country at their position, mcds AA candidates and top 100 players in US.
The shooting guard from Maryland was NAMED Rice (Rodney), he didn’t go there. He went to USC for a bigger bag, played six games and then was out for the year after hurting his shoulder. They tried to get another quality shooting guard, but it fell through. They had the McNeeky kid but UT didn’t offer the classes he needed. They tried to get the shooting guard from Maryland that went to Rice ( wouldn’t be surprised to see him here next year. Burg was a stop gap shot in the dark.
I don’t think there’s a standard definition of diamond in the rough so your meaning may not be the same as mine. Anyway, he is absolutely not a polished college player whether he was the best in his state by some arbitrary ranking or not. What he did in HS no longer matters at all. He has a long way to go to be what we need. Let’s hope gets there, quickly.Well you said diamond in the rough out of HS and that’s not what Brown was.
That's kind of my point. The minutes declined after Cade's injury and during SEC play. But it's not like he was competing for Cade's minutes. I think we had to shift our rotation and Evans or whoever kept beating him out. Maybe regression isn't the right word, but Barnes and company figured out that he's not doing anything offensively for them, especially with SEC caliber talent.I don't know that Abrams "regressed". He hasn't played enough to make such an assertion. I am not sure Barnes and Co. have explained why his PT has dropped so no one really knows outside of the team. He looks enthusiastic pulling for his teammates from the bench.
As of today based on a season’s worth of college basketball, Brown has raw talent that needs a lot of polishing. I don’t care what his HS stats or ranking were. How bout we let the freshman develop and see what happens. He was brought in to develop until Cade got hurt.
You do confuse me by stating a recruit is a diamond in the rough, which a 4* will never be, and in same sentence saying we can’t go on what they did in HS. What the hell do you expect coaches to base their recruiting off of other than their play when in HS. HS performance is how you get a scholarship.
I’m not saying run it back completely, but you mentioned keeping 4, which meant 5 transfers out plus the 4 expected leaving college, that’s 9 departures. I’m not saying you bring back all 9, and bring in your 3 freshman, and sign 1 transfer, but I don’t think you want 5 transfers out either.
Estrella
Evans
Phillips
Brown
Boswell
Henderson
Burg
Massamba
Carey
Those are your 9 returners, I think in an ideal world you’d lose just 2-3 from that group and that allows you to bring in 3-4 transfers.
As for when Barnes is done, folks have been saying 1-2 years for 10 years now.
I think the term for what you’re describing is “developmental prospect” or maybe “project”.I don’t think there’s a standard definition of diamond in the rough so your meaning may not be the same as mine. No he isn’t some athletic freak but he’s second on team in rebounds with a lot less minutes. I feel like if the team had consistent scorers he wouldn’t be as big of an issue. He could grab some junk rebounds and a few points and play a role. He’s just had to be used too much for a couple of reasons this season. He was always gonna be a role player and was not brought in to be a scorer. Our scorers just never consistently figured it out and it all compounded to a strange roster.Except Rodman was athletic and could jump. Carey can't move and his vertical is embarrassing for a big man on a P4 roster. His negatives far outweigh any positives. Lack of athleticism, lack of vertical, can't shoot, can't hit FTs, and he's a hothead that lets his temper get to him. If he did anything good consistently that may outweigh other negatives but he really does nothing well.
He'd be better off at an OVC type school.
Still needs to make at least 65-70% of his FTsNo he isn’t some athletic freak but he’s second on team in rebounds with a lot less minutes.
