Recruiting Football Talk VIII

What is our philosophy now? The book is out on the Heupel scheme. Are we moving to the pistol as rumored? Given our situation on the OL and with the WRs, I'd have to think we'd need a guy who has some serious running ability. Kinda want the Becht kid to be honest.
Become multiple: Pistol + 12 personnel + more rub concepts - less vertical. More like Golesh + Ole Miss and less like a teen on NCAA spamming gut runs and vertical streaks.

He needs to drastically upgrade his staff. I think his loyalty to guys in his sphere is admirable, but when they simply can't do the job at a level this league demands, it's the wrong move. We have some coaches on this staff who were bad hires/promotions.

We've got players who are bad evals. Keep going back to the UCF fans on their board who voiced similar complaints. Initially, I considered it sour grape over being jilted by a coach. They also complained about Heupels "system" and the fact that he had won with Frosts recruits but his recruiting results didn't appear to be at nearly the same level.

Can Heupel change? Hope so. I think he's a good man, but I have to wonder if his firing at OU damaged him to the point that he isn't willing to make the tough decisions that all college coaches face? He will get a pass this year due to the Nico teams antics. At some point soon, this will be the team that Heupel will have to own. I'm not sure how that will turn out for him.
Very legit points and post IMO. Agree completely.

Top dog cannot have "friends" as subordinates that he is not willing to part with if their work is not to the level it needs to be. Top dog and the program lose if he does. We all know the weak spots in the sfaff. He should as well and do something about it. Being approx 10th in recruiting seasonally with questions in development in a few position groups to go with scheme/playcalling issues will not provide him the job security most all of us want him to have. Having a good man with a strong understanding of the T and its tradition is important, but so is achieving excellence as Voltello and Barnes have.

Hope he takes the next step. Now would be the time with Volnation rallying behind him and the program with this Nico mess. The national goodwill for the Vol program as a whole is at a high right now. Capitalize on it.

Don't believe for a moment Boo is pulling a Nico. The kid got everything he wanted in last negotiations. Bump in pay and shot at playing offense and defense, what more would he want! A Bugatti👀👀
If so, I think it's ridiculous and short sighted given the Nico situation. So a potential "leader" on defense who wants to be a two way player and the primary return man on special teams is angling for.yet another raise after presumably getting a bump recently along with Matthews? Yeah, that's a real team leader. I'd certainly feel great about depending on a guy like that.

How discouraging is it to WRs in this offense to run all over the field all night and have 0 faith they'll get the ball when they get open bc the QB will not predict the route and throw them open or hit them in stride. Bc the QB consistently holds the ball too long.

Then the WRs inevitably reduce their effort. Then they look bad.
Last season Thornton was the only WR who realized Nico needed more help with the obvious and that’s probably because he had more experience than most of the others. He’d come back and bail Nico out but Nico was also guilty of tossing some murder balls. It’s no wonder Squirrel stayed injured.

Which should tell you how bad the situation with Nico really was for him to cut him lose.

Choices for QB1 position

A. Get a guy out of Portal ( then watch everyone complain about the guy)

Or

B. Give the keys to the car to Merk or GM ( then watch individuals complain about not getting a QB from the Portal)

Or

C. Both or nothing works, fahr errybody!

How many players on the 98 team, the 2001 team wouldve angled for a pay raise back then? How many did and we just never heard about it? Not saying its moral or ethical, but its the way its set up.

Boo can help us, or hurt us. Just that simple.

Because our recruiting is average. We have no choice.

100% correct here. Sure he’s gonna get some slack for the Nico thing but this is a big distraction from continuing to keep awful coaches like Elarbee. Our OL is going to be below average in the SEC without some insane spring portal signings.

We have a very legit chance to win 7 games which will be very bad for the program

What’s our situation on the OL?

What’s our situation with WRs besides lack of depth?

Kelley Washington would have 100% angled for a pay raise. Especially after that LSU game where he went for 250+

Pistol in itself isn't a philosophy, just a formation choice within the spread.

Spread is really the system philosophy we run, within it you have some variances though. Air Raid which is more focused on quick passes and less runs overall, Traditional Spread mostly shotgun with classic option runs (read option specifically), and then Pistol which opens up more running choices...sweeps from WRs or RBs lined up closer to the OL etc. also QB is closer to OL and RB usually directly behind him.

We're more traditional spread, but the WR sets and routes are altered to be wider and more about spacing the secondary.
