Pistol Formation Thoughts?

I think you're overstating it. Dooley himself says they can run everything the same. It changes his footwork slightly on running plays and that's it. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Yeah I mean I know the plays don't change.. But for a line that can't make a hole when we run under center... Seems like they would have to hold that hole longer in the pistol.. Pass blocking... not worried... Route timing I'm a little worried.. But Bray is getting a lot of practice this week and he's had 5 weeks... He probably doesn't have the right timing anyways.. I think he's got great instinct and will probably do fine... I feel like our run game is going to struggle still... Not that I expected it to be better.. but I just think we won't even have one at all..

You are wasting your time. These guys think we are going to come out running Nevada's offense Saturday.

I don't think that at all actually.. I expect to see the same plays.. My OP was just on how it would work and if it would be effective or not?? It is different...

Same exact plays with he quarterback in the shotgun. Thats the only way it's different.

I like the pistol formation.
I would like to see Bray throw it 40 times a game if he can too though.
Switching to the I formation for running plays, and the spread for pass plays is too obvious for the defense.
Staying in one formation that you can run all the plays out of, if that is possible seems a lot better to me.

They line up the runningback deeper than most, so it's not going to make much difference.

It actually might help disguise it a little more. They do tip that off way too often.

It's not going to hurt it, can't go anywhere but up. Rock bottom is hard to get below.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a direct snap or 2... I don't think it will happen.. but I think it could work.. The only down side to this style offense is that out of shotgun I like to see draws and screens...none of which CJC runs at all..

Any chance that this Pistol stuff is just a ploy to give Vanderbilt more things to work on in practice?

so sacrifice the long term for the short by running a gimmick offense, great

Dooley stated today in his interview it is not a new offense... just a way to get the ball to TB without having to be under center to take the snap on his thumb. He made it known it is not what Nevada runs... a true Pistol Offense but more adapting what we do with Bray backed up a few yards to take the snap.

He even laughed when more questions came up and basically said "Guys it's not complicated... he backs up a few steps now to take the hike"

I agree.. but I still think it changes a few things up.. There still a few different things you have to account for in that formation..

Basically for a snap that would normally be a 3 to 5 step drop, the QB is already there. The only thing that might change is timing for the QB instead of picking up a read on the 3rd or 5th step he has to wait like in shotgun.
For a snap that would be a running play between the tackles nothing really changes, except the QB doesn't run backwards to meet the HB.
On a running play outside the tackles, the angle for a hand off will be off, so you would probably see a toss instead of a stretch play.
I imagine for plays that would normally be run out of shotgun, we will just line up in shotgun.

yea .. he also said it was dumb to have someone with a broke thumb start every play with a (smacked his hands together, simulating a snap into a qb's hands) on his thumb

The biggest difference with the formation is the fullback I think. I think the FB goes away.
UT won't be able to use a FB in the pistol formation like in the I formation.
They can run I formation plays, there just won't be a FB lead block.
Which if they can stick with that formation for all the plays would be better.

I think you can use the fullback. He would just be beside bray not behind him.

Well yes and no... I mean't that I don't think the coaches would do it if Bray was a no go for this game... They wouldn't change it up to pistol for Worley... The only reason they are changing is to get Bray in the game..

agreed. if it gets bray in the game you've got to do it. imo

Yeah I think the timing will kind of be an issue but more so because he's been out for 5 weeks.. it's not like we are changing his normal timing up.. I think the reg shotgun plays will be out of shotgun still.. I just wonder how it will affect the run game good or bad in the pistol.. I hope it helps somehow.. I guess well just have to wait and see..

HEy, Bray ran the pistol in HS, good enough for me...He did a pretty good job chucking the ball around in HS...At least he is very familiar with it..:eek:k:

I think you're right.. We will most likely see the same offense just bray in a new spot.. pretty much.. Still changes a few things up.. but minor changes that will hopefully go in our favor..
