Pistol Formation Thoughts?

This is how it looks pretty much.

I would like to see the pistol replace the I formation and spread formation UT uses.
seems like you could use the same formation for both sets of plays.
Only difference would be replacing the FB with a WR.
I think it would make the offense less predictable, UT gets in the I formation to run most of the time and the spread to pass.

Yes, they do have a great defense. What does that have to do with the fact that they run a vast majority of their plays out of a "gimmick" offense?

The pistol would not improve things at all. It takes too long for the RB to get to the line of scrimmage as it is - much less adding another couple of yards. If the RB was moved up to 5 yards back of it he would have a much better chance to gain some yards.

They aren't doing it to improve things... They are only doing it to get Bray the ball.. We will still run the same plays. It might effect the running game a little.. but we have no run game as it is.. It should help the passing game if anything..

I personally like the pistol formation, would just like to see a little more diversity in the plays out of this set.

Yeah I agree a little bit... CJC is pretty vanilla.. I have hope that will more talent he can open some things up in the future. Lets hope so anyways..

Now that this thread has been railroaded, I dunno about a serious response but here it goes.

Has anybody heard of teams running the pistol successfuly without a QB who is a threat to take off? It's like a shotgun formation that allows for better downhill running if you've got a line that can run block (which we can't) but I don't see how it would work for the players we've got.

Dooley explained it in his presser earlier this week. Basically you have the pistol formation (used occasionally by Alabubba) and the Pistol offense used by Nevada. We would fall into the formation category running our normal offense.

We aren't running a pistol style offense, just using the formation. The formation doesn't require the QB to be able to run. Bama uses it occasionally. The only reason we are going to use the formation Saturday is so we can still run our pro style offense without Bray having to be under center and risk hurting his thumb again.

I personally like the formation, but still, blockers have to block, and runners have to run for this, or any formation to be successful. If Poole, or whoever dances around too long, or are immediatly met by a big d-lineman, it really doesnt matter what formation they are in.

You wrong, but your QB has to be a run threat for this formation.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a direct snap or 2... I don't think it will happen.. but I think it could work.. The only down side to this style offense is that out of shotgun I like to see draws and screens...none of which CJC runs at all..

Yeah, what's up with that?
