Our Assistant Coaches blasted on TOS

Win and more recruits will come...it's that simple. Im EXCITED about this season and we have some excellent pieces for the future that signed after a 5-7 season. If it's true JP is mad about recruiting then I'm okay with that all day long. Its always a long play with a lot of these kids and if we get some momentum this season it's going to start rolling. We have the pieces to have a great season. Just remember the big names we landed after last season and think about the possibilities if we have a better season. Like a lot of posters have acknowledged we are getting more "hats on the table" and it's positive in be in the mix. I think we have some stability in our coaches and this season is going to be much better.

People trying to blame the past and give Pruitt a free skate. Before we hired Pruitt, Cade Mayes flat out said he'd go to UTK if Gruden was hired. Maybe Gruden was never happening, maybe it was a fleeting fancy that was quickly extinguished in his own mind but not before an off the record discussion got repeated and embellished to the point that it started an inferno in the interwebz. You want quick turnarounds you have to hire a rock star that recruits will flock to. There are guys like that out there. We just didn't offer enough because UTAD thinks we'll buy anything, a belief that they're probably rethinking in light of dismal ticket sales and donations. Whatever it takes, CJP is on the clock and time is running out.

Agree. No more excuses for CJP. No more Butch left the tank empty, we don’t have the right players yet, etc. This is Tennessee and this is big boy football and he is getting big boy $$$ to get the job done. This is CJPs team now and he’s the CEO. The past doesn’t matter any more. Let’s start with Vandy. I don’t care what our class rank is, how much talent we have, how many inexperienced guys we have, and how many new coaches we have. We should NEVER lose to Vandy PERIOD much less get blown out like we did last year. No more excuses. If we lose to Vandy again he does NOT get a free pass and he is likely not the right guy. There is never any circumstance where we should lose to Vandy and if the coach can’t be creative enough to figure out a way to win that’s in him 100%.

Thanks for being man enough to explain it. I'm on the outside looking in. Never was one of the cool kids. I thought maybe TOS was short for a Knoxville radio show, blog site or a website I didn't know about.

I’m in the same boat thanks for clarifying. Dang Millennials.

I’ve heard this every time we hire a coach. At some point somebody has to overachieve

Precisely. Per the post I just sent—- no more excuses and blaming previous for our current performance. This in TN, big boy football and CJP gets paid big boy $$$s. Figure it out and quit making excuses. Time to set our standards high and overachieve.

Yep. If recruiting is the egg and winning is the chicken, the chicken comes first. I'm not sure how you take over a dumpster fire program, immediately start pulling top 5 classes, then after a period of years you start winning more games with those better recruits.

The way it happens is that a coach arrives and almost immediately starts winning with the "old" roster at a level greater than people anticipated. The program is then able to parlay that on-the-field success into recruiting successes, which makes the roster better, which leads to more winning (snowball effect).

The following rebuilding jobs are different from Tennessee's, but look at the timing of some of the elite coaches' first win/appearance for some hardware. Urban won a title in year 2. Saban played for an SEC title in year 2. Kirby won an SEC title and played for a national title in year 2. Even Dabo, who a lot of people will say is a perfect example of the virtues of having patience with a coach, won a conference title in his 3rd full season. Bob Stoops won a title in year 2. Point being...these coaches "overachieved" (nobody was really expecting that much success that early) early in their tenures.
Pruitt has been here ONE season, and he inherited hot garbage. What the hell is wrong with some of you?

Why the hell would a recruit care about a 2005 national title? What happened in 2005 means little.

Brown is much like Fulmer. Had some success a while ago but I’d way past his prime. His qb single handedly won a natty for him but he made a lot of game day blunders as well.

I meant in 2020. By year 3, Georgia/Florida should be competitive games and we should clearly be better than South Carolina, Mizzou, Vandy, and Kentucky. I think 6-6 would be a pretty good result this year, 7-5 would be very good. 2020 should be something like 8-4/9-3.

No. With the 2019 schedule 6-6 is NOT pretty good. Again, we need to start setting our standards higher and it is time to start overachieving. This is why our coaches get paid huge $$$$. We have learned to accept average results over the past 10 years.

Wow another unrealistic Vol fan. Shocker.

It shows a coach can actually coach. Why is this difficult to understand?

Because it was 14 years ago. Whether Mack Brown won a national title 14 years ago has little effect on what he can do now.

Larry Coker won a national title in 2002, wanna call him up to Tennessee? Lol

At some point, some coach is gonna have to overachieve or else this program is going to continue to be stranded in the desert

Yup. We gotta somehow break the chain just like generations of dysfunctional family members. I have been ‘realistic’ the past 10 years. I have decided to set my expectations higher and expect more.

No we've had to accept plain bad results and inept leadership for the past ten years.

The people you think your expecting more from aren't there anymore. These are the people brought here to fix what they left behind.

Goals and standards never change. Expectations for a season are situationally driven and can be adjusted accordingly.

And a fan that finally draws a line regarding expectations in year two of the newest next guy isn't gonna change that.

Phil Steele ranks our 2019 schedule as the 7th toughest in the nation. 6 or 7 wins is a step in the right direction and that’s coming from a self-proclaimed negavol.

I agree. But expecting that this year is dumb imo. In 2020? Fine.
Well technically over achieving is by default not expected... Know what I mean?

I think most would say somewhere around 6 or 7 wins probably should be expected this season.

So over achieving would be in that 7+ area..

Recruits don't believe in us...Why should they?...Nobody wants to be a part of a losing program...Until we start winning regularly no top recruit is going to want to come here.

CJP has put together a great staff. Just win and recruiting will take off for everyone onboard.

“Just win and recruiting will take off”

There in lies the problem, it’s hard to win in the SEC without outstanding players and Pruitt knows this better than anyone, perhaps that’s why he’s pissed, I don’t blame him.

Well sure it is, but we recruit well enough to get to 8-9 wins a season so recruits will notice. Butch Jones won 9 games two years in a row. We can get back to a championship level, this isn’t a crappy football program, this isn’t Vandy.

No, Vandy owns the Vols until we prove otherwise, unfortunately

When you see "win abd they'll come" it's not being presented as we have to win the division or something.

We win 6+, compete the way we should all season long and just avoid the debacles we had last year and you at least put a product out there that can be sold.

Vision can only go so far. They need to see we're further along than last year and improvement in the personnel from last year abd finally what kind of difference these coordinators look to make.

On the field will matter.

Winner winner chicken dinner. I hope Pruitt gets it done but right now he is simply not cutting it in recruiting. If it's his assistants, that buck still stops at his feet.
