Knowles Expected to be DC

Yeah I heard that Day was meddling too much. He prefers to run his program as he sees fit. I don’t see Heupel as the type to get in the way.
I've always thought that the appealing thing about being a DC under a guy like Heupel is the autonomy. Josh is an offensive guy, so he's going to leave the defense to the DC...like his own mini head coach of one side of the ball. Spurrier was the same way...and 3 of his DCs at Florida ended up becoming head coaches.

Unfortunately, the real story is much different He was forced to make changes at Ohio State when it wasn't working. Dude is old school and wants to do everything his way. Ohio State did not try to keep him and neither did Matt Campbell. Same thing happened at Oklahoma St. The young guns like Walters and some others would have been a much better choice. I hope it works out.

You mean like fielding the #1 defense in the country and winning the 2024 natty?

Matt Campbell was bringing Jon Heacock with him from Iowa State, regardless of who the DC was at Penn State. They’ve coached together for over a decade.

YIKES. With the HC position at Michigan now open, could Knowles be a candidate?

Get him on paper now, dang it!!

I doubt it. Michigan already made a huge mistake when they hired Moore. Knowles was the HC at Cornell from 2004-2009 with an overall record of 26-34. That isn't going to move the needle for anyone in Ann Arbor.

michigan message boards are thinking they are going to make a run at Deboer or Gruden 😂 😂 😂 😂
Their message boards should be more concerned about their precious university getting sued for literally everything. The program clearly cheats on the field and off the field. Shut it down.

The breakdown of Knowles/his defenses is it always takes a year for it to get properly implemented. Apparently a very complicated/hard to learn scheme, but once learned, is really good.

Which makes one question why we'd go with him considering this fan base couldn't handle a single down year from Banks, but whatever I guess.

Like the hire, but it will likely require patience before elite results are seen.

Did you just say one bad year for Banks? Were you asleep his first season and his second season pretty much kept us out of the playoffs in a couple of key games so sure his first and last seasons were terrible. His second season was better but not great and his third and fourth seasons were pretty good to great. So the expectation for you is 2/5 years? Good to know then Knowles should be amazing

I think most are coming to the conclusion that next year is going to be another significant transition year for us.

Unless we can portal hunt some key defensive talent and potentially retain our QB who is suing for additional eligibility, then we are going to have a rough season regardless.

We need to start portal hunting Michigan and Penn St's defensive talent.

If you hold this little of an understanding of context regarding football coaches, it's probably best to avoid forming opinions on them.
Not in union shops. There is a coaches union. They might not have meetings nor pay dues per se, but their union is very very strong

Well, like I said in another thread, next Michigan head coach will be likened to the guy in the circus that follows behind the elephants. Between the Harbaugh sign stealing episodes and the most current HC being fired and arrested, you can hear this all the way from Ann Arbor:

Clean Up on Aisle 4

Hopefully, UT and fans are patient. My understanding is hos defensive schemes is complex, takes time to learn, si expecting instant results may not be forth coming. Kind of like the Fulmer DC hire that doomed him.

lol so you're describing the Sunseri defense that was a complete disaster? 😂 didn't people say this exact same thing about Sunseri? he had a different defensive scheme that we weren't used to runnning and it "took time to learn"?

There's a difference between Knowles background and Sunseri's background when we hired him.

Fulmer didn't hire Sun boy, I think that was Doody. I'm referring to the guy Fulmer hired, and players claimed was to complex, they didn't know what to do.
I viewed Sun boy as a sabotage plant.

Gruden is besties with Dave Portnoy, so if there is mutual interest, he can have the Michigan job.
We'll see. He hasn't coached football in four years and doesn't have any experience as a HC in college. Michigan just fired a guy that gave the university a huge black eye. Gruden also resigned from LV after all of his derogatory comments in emails came to light and some were racist. He did apologize for it. That stuff would absolutely be used against him on the recruiting trail as well. He would definitely be an upgrade over the guy UM just canned but I just don't see Michigan making a risky hire like that after the disaster with Sherrone Moore.
