Is Rocky Top out dated?

Does anyone think that maybe playing a 50 year old hillbilly country song is past it's prime? With the advent of other music to pump up the crowd and the team gaining popularity nationwide, it may be time to consider making a change. My first home game was in 1972, when I saw Haskel Stanback run the opening kickoff back for a TD against Penn State, in a Big Orange victory. Rocky Top wasn't played then and the crowd didn't seem to miss it. I know this may not be a popular idea, but just wondering how most fans feel.

Thank you for your comment Barack. However, neither capitalism, the US Constitution, the Star Spangled Banner, Christianity nor Rocky Top are outdated.

I agree. I can't stand that backward, hillbilly song either, but you're never going to win that argument here. Rocky Top was rarely played when I was a student back in the 70s. I think it came into vogue in the mid-late eighties, so anyone that tells you it's some kind of "tradition" doesn't know their history.

As for it being a school "fight song", there's absolutely nothing about the University of Tennessee in the song. It's about a criminals breaking federal and state laws and killing law enforcement agents. I'm SOOO proud,.... NOT!

You probably want to change the school mascot to the whooping crane as well.

It's not country; it's bluegrass.

Winning just 9 games a year got outdated, so we got rid of it.

I've known a lot of vol fans in my life. You sir, are no vol fan.

PLayed on country radio stations, but classified as bluegrass music, since the Wilbourne Bros have a fiddle and a banjo in the band. Maybe having some banjos play at each game would add some authenticity to the rendition the band plays.

I think about 3/4 of VN is related to the kid who played the banjo in "Deliverance."

No, it's still as great as ever! One of my favorite memories as a Volunteer fan is listening to Gamecock callers whine in their post game call in show about hearing Rocky Top so many times after we beat them in Columbia in 2006. Other teams hate the song and find it annoying, and I love that fact! They'll find it even more annoying after we start beating most of our competition on a regular basis again.

Is "The Star Spangled Banner" outdated? What about your mother, hotdogs and apple pie? Would you relegate those to the dust bins of history? Have you no pride, Sir?

Did you just put his mother and hot dogs in the same sentence?
Classic.

I agree! The only conclusion I can come up with is he's either a troll from vandy or Kentucky and he gets tired of hearing it the whole game as we spank there a**es

Having played Rocky Top a few thousand times in the Pride starting in 1981, it was in full effect by the start of the 80's. I haven't read the entire thread, but does anyone even know what the actual "fight song" of UT is?

No way they mess with Rocky Top. What do you suggest next, we take away the "Lady" from the women's sports programs? Um.....wait.....

OP, are you AD Hart?
