Devrin is not even 5'7...don't believe what you read about his physical stats. He's a midget and he weighs a buck nothing. Not saying he's not athletic, but he's an elf. We are about to hit a stretch of real football, smash mouth football. Running between the tackles is how you win in the SEC....it's a concern.
Idk if you are aware or not, but Alabama is also a zone running team. So our running game is very similar.
Was thinking about why our run game has struggled. And I think maybe a reason could be the players and the scheme.
Chaney runs a zone blocking scheme for the running game. I watched a video from Alex Gibbs (some consider him the "father of the zone run game", he was the Denver Broncos O-Line coach during the Broncos' two super bowl seasons) and says you must have a agile, quick offensive line. You block areas in a zone, and you must be able to be quick off the snap and find your man. You have to be able to beat your man to the spot/area in which you are blocking.
Well, look at our starting O-line weight:
Richardson: 332 lbs
Fulton: 324 lbs
James: 323 lbs
Thomas: 310 lbs
Stone: 300 lbs
Those are big boys. I noticed some today that the lineman don't have extremely quick feet laterally. They do move back well in pass protection and do well in that area.
I wonder if maybe our current O-Line and the scheme doesn't fit. It just surprises me we have such a good pass blocking team, but our run blocking team is so mediocre.
What do you think VN?
Didn't see the game today but I think the problem starts with the coaching of Chaney. A lot of you guys are too young to remember but this has been his M.O. all the way back to purdue in the 90's with drew brees. Great passing offense but not any power running game and not much better than 7-4 in the big 10. Like it or not this is what we are going to get with him calling the offensive shots. I say get rid of him once bray and co are gone and bring in an oc who will pound the rock like lsu and bama.
Sorry D. Young is NOT an SEC RB. Eddie Lacy...that's an SEC RB. The fact that D. Young is even considered in the rotation speaks volumes about our talent level. It's probably the weakest position we have on the field, except for kicker.
Can anyone compare these guys to a Montario Hardesty? Absolutely not. Montario had a horrible O Line, HORRIBLE. You are telling me the Sullin boys could lift the jocks of our O Line now? NO, NO, NO. Montario eeked out 1300 yards though, because he is freaking talented.
I'm aware of the scheme, have you sat down and compared the playcalling and how it works? Bama obviously knows what they're doing and has it down.
I'm not comparing our offenses because our passgame is obviously a huge strong point. I'm just talking about run game philosophy.

Funny you bring this up because I was just saying this on another site. I do think it's relevant. We have power I o-lineman but we're running a spread with zone blocking. Many spread coaches prefer to recruit lineman in the 270-280 range and bulking them up. We have MONSTERS who were all highly touted. All I know is that it's frustrating. Am I the only one who thinks we actually run better from the I?

When did height become important at RB? How is that relevant?
Shorter guys typically change direction quicker. That's why most corners and rb's aren't very tall.
Why do we want to run Alabama's offense? Do they have Bray, CP, and Hunter?
Run game philosphy is the same. We are both zone teams.
Now execution is obviously better by Bama because they probably have he best oline in the country.
The play calling is different because our oline is not the same as Bama's oline, and because our passing game is better. So obviously we aren't going to pound it like Bama does.

Bama is a run first team. We are not. That is not the same philosophy. That was point. :hi:
Personally don't care whether it's bamas offense or not but the last six national champions could all blow teams off the line with the running game. I like to see opposing teams punished in the 3rd and 4th qtr and we simply aren't able to do that.
