Current O-Line=bad fit?

We need to run the ball downhill. That's all there is to it, we should not be running from formations where the CENTER is pulling to run block. It makes us run east west. Our line is built for north south downhill football. All of our success has been out of the I formation and draws from the shotgun. We need to kill the pistol now. That is all :)

But you see, the pistol can also be a downhill running formation with a FB as well.

It's not the formations or even the plays. It's that our backs want to stretch things out to the side and don't seem to want to cut a play back inside when they have a crease to run through.

The biggest hole of the day was shown from the ground endzone level. Neal stagger stepped, slowed a tad, then hit the gear. That's too much time and is a bad habit. I know he is keeping his feet moving and tries to be patient, but when you see light, you gotta go now.

I liked Q. Don't care who it was against. I like Lane too, but that fumble cost him and his propensity to get spun down awkwardly annoys me for some reason.

Run a two back pro set and I more and hit the dang hole with a good RB and you will gain yards with this line. Yes, ditch the pistol and play some pro style old time Raider style type of O. Also, like Miami with Marino type of O ect...

I'm not denying the backs aren't very good...but...

I'm still not seeing a consistent push from the O-Line either.

Lane has a habit of laying it down?

By the way, I don't think Bray has been knocked down yet.

Let's give the line some credit. They are also blocking better and more aggressively. Power running game just isn't UT's game right now. Waiting for it to develop with this set of backs is a waste of energy.
Spread it and sling it.

Last week you guys were complaining that we had no I formation where the back could run behind the FB. This week we did and Neal slayed from this formation. There was no need to pound the rock in this game. There were other priorities to expand the multiplicity needed to stretch the field and maximize big plays. Neal averaged more than a yard more than Lane today, held on to the ball and ran north and south. The run game is a work in progress but it has not let us down yet. This team is what it is. Hunter was given the chance to restore his confidence today. Rivera showed out. We worked the wildcat which might have some different looks with Pig running it. Que got some nice carries. I am amped up to see what this team can do.

We can keep blaming the "average" running backs all we want, that's fine, maybe a 5* RB would dominate in this offense. But from what I have seen, we haven't had a solid running game since '09 when Hardesty was running the ball. All of our backs looked impressive actually, after the play caller changed, our running game hasn't been the same. At least that is how I see it.

We ran good from I formation in both games, we ran terrible east/west from pistol formation both games. Nothing changed IMO.

I still keep wondering if our line even likes run blocking to start with. Most linemen love it, but you don't get that sense from watching this team.

What's the alternative to zone blocking?

We could run the power play, but do you really think that if our line is too slow to zone block, that they will be fast enough to pull on power?

Could have a valid point here. In Kiffin's yr in 09 we also ran a zone scheme that to me ran the ball fairly well. Part of that might have been due to the smaller line we had that yr. The Sullins' twins were both a shade under 300lbs if i recall.

I credit Poole not the Sullin's brothers.

RB talent is miserable. The end.
D Young is not an SEC RB! What a joke

Our running backs are very physically talented. They just need to learn to find the gap and hit it when they get the opportunity and stop dancing around in the backfield.

And maybe it's the Knoxville bias in me, but I think Dev Young is more than capable as an SEC back. Maybe not every down, but he can succeed in this league.
