CBS Sports: Butch Jones is in trouble

No its not

He will peak at 8 wins. He's not out coaching anyone. He just lost to a first year coach with a bad offense

He's 1-1 against Vandy
He's 0-9 against Missouri, Georgia, Bama, and Florida
He's 2-0 against Kentucky

He's not HOF coaching material

Come on. in 2013, we were vandy. Last year maybe we were USC before SOS and Holtz took it over. Of course our record has sucked the last two years.

We can still be 8-4 this year, that's all I care about. And I really hope we are.

We were predicted by some to return to the SECC in the 2008 preseason after narrowly missing a win there in 2007. I would say that's pretty relevant. Not sure what your definition is.
Not losing to Cal by 2 TDs
Not being blown out by Florida
Not being blown out by Bama
Earn our way to the sec championship game instead of having to hope the gators screw it up.

2007 was the year I realized Fulmer was done.

I need to edit my lost to add 2-0 against SC

Yep it seemed like year after year we were praying that Florida blew 2 gms ateast..

If so it will put us in an even deeper hole than we are in. Tennessee has not been a factor nationally for 7 years now. If we fire Butch this year we might double or even triple that number. I say barring a losing season he has another year yet.

That doesn't mean I'm not still expecting 8-4. I am.

I think you're totally wrong. Think about it for a second. Butch has brought the talent back to UT, that is not debateable. When he came in he had to follow Doofus with a dry cupboard talent wise.

Just for conversation, lets say Butch is let go after the 2016 season (not saying its going to happen, just spitballin here). A new coach would walk into a very talented UT football team. Look at what Mac is doing at UF already and a new coach would be walking into a better situation than what he walked into.

Your assumption that a new coach would set us back 14, 21 or even another 7 years is absolutely ridiculous. If Tennessee were truly set back 7 years from just a head coaching change, then our program might as well shut down permanently. With this roster, there should be no reason for another coach to come here and fail IF Butch were to be let go.

Ah, well, in a word, YES! Actually you/we have no choice. Jones has another year and he can prove his system works or not. Jones will readily admit that he has to produce but most sensible folks said long ago and continue to say we aren't there yet. Think of it this way, if we reboot now, you can begin making plans for the possibility of 2019 being a winning season, maybe. Stay the course as many predicted and maybe you see results next year.

Otherwise, call my wife's, hairdressers, garbage pickup guys, mother in law, who goes to Church with the Gruden's once upon a time auto mechanic and see what he says about......soon?
You didn't really say anything and your smart ass remarks lend nothing to any of this. I'll ask again, How does another year matter if he continues to manage and coach on game day the way he has to this point? Youth nor depth had anything to do with or influence the decisions he made on Saturday. We don't need another year to see if his system (at least his game day management) will work or not because it has been proven at least twice in four games that it does not.

You keep going with this "we're not there yet" bs, exactly what does that have to do with the coaching decisions that he has made on game day? None of our "getting there" issues have anything to do with the decisions he made in the loss to UF on Saturday.

I'm not personally calling for his head because in reality we're stuck with him. But at the same time I know that without a change in his coaching philosophy and game day management a year is not gonna matter. The results will not change. Your simply sticking your head in the sand trying not to see the reality of how compromised this staff really is.

Worst part about it...this is just the outer bands of the storm. The real media beat down begins tomorrow morning....and it's going to be BRUTAL!

He's made HIMSELF...not the program...the laughing stock. Media pundits KNOW this team is better than this, but Butch Jones has been exposed.

He and Janzek needs to go into the locker room and apologize to every single player on that team, who have invested the most in all of this. They deserve better coaching, and he better make the choice to give it to them...or he's done.

I agree with you. A good HBC should be able to come in here and win right away. And if really good, be like Saban and challenge in year 2.

With that said, I support Butch through 2016. Even though I also agree with the poster above who states that Butch needs to take a long hard look at himself and his staff. What he is doing is not working for 60 minutes. He cannot continue doing the same things and merely hope for different results.

If he fails to make major strides by mid-2016, we need to start looking. Here is the thing about our talented roster. It won't be there forever if he shows he can't coach. You have to cut the cord early enough so the new guy has talent to work with.

The garbage that was coming out in support of Butch before the season was way premature.

Similarly, the decision to give Butch a raise this past off season was about as short-sighted a decision as you'll ever see.

I thought the Gator Bowl win was overhyped too much. I mean yeah it a nice win but Iowa was a terrible team.

Actually, I think of the Iowa game as a sort of harbinger. They outscored us 21-3 in the 4th quarter. We had just built enough of a lead in the 1st half that it didn't matter. That game told us a lot about who we are and how we would play against comparable opposition.

So if we fire Jones after this year it sets us back nationally 14 to maybe even 21 years?

Does that range change if he goes 4-8 this year or gets fired next year?

I would welcome an 8-4 season, especially after the last decade that we have had. BUT, there is no excuse for the way we lost OU and FL games. So, its really a judgement call on the AD. Do you start from scratch with a LOADED roster and hope someone of higher caliber will take the job and offer them chump change as compared to other programs, or do you take the wait and see approach???

No doubt Butch has recruited TN back into the national limelight, but you CANNOT let wins like that slip away. NO WAY, NO HOW

Similarly, the decision to give Butch a raise this past off season was about as short-sighted a decision as you'll ever see.

UT administration had a history of giving raises to former coaches when it was not warranted . This isn't the first time it's happened.

A prominent coach wouldn't touch the job with the proverbial 10 foot pole if the administration is gullible enough to fall for the torch and pitchfork routine of VN. After all, that is what started this 8 year old fiasco.

Actually this all started before that, when CPF was given his golden parachute contract with the clause requiring 7 to 8 wins per year.

The administration lowered it's standards and we've suffered ever since.

I won't say I deserve better, but those players need Butch to step up and lead them to victory. They don't need him to try to sit on a lead because he is afraid of his team making some mistakes. He got the lead by taking some chances.
4 plays that determined the outcome of the game:
1. Dobbs fumble. Not Butch's fault.
2. Not going for 2.
3. Running the ball on 3rd and eight instead of passing it for the 1st down to maintain possession and run the clock out on our next to last drive.
4. Running a prevent D on 4th and 14 instead of bringing pressure. Pressure had worked on the 3 previous plays, that's why it was 4th and 14.

One thing is for sure. In order for Butch to take the next step with this program, this coaching staff is going to have to play to win for 4 qtrs not just 3 and then try to preserve the win in the 4th. If he truly trusts these players he will trust them to execute the plays that the down and distance calls for. You don't win championships by sitting on your hands. If he would have just been successful on 1 out 4 of the above mentioned plays, UT at least ties that game in regulation. If he was successful on 2 out 4 of them UT wins that game.

And that's not even counting these 2 mistakes in the last 1 minute:
1. Having Dobbs hold the ball so long waiting on Snaps in the 1 minute drill running off valuable seconds and causing a false start penalty for 5 yards. This happened last year time and time again.
2. Not calling a timeout with 10 seconds left and costing us 5 yards on a substitution penalty and adding 5 yards on the field goal attempt.

Both of those things cost us 10 yards on the FG, and at least 20 seconds on the play clock.

Butch has recruited players who are better than his coaches. It's time for this coaching staff to evaluate their in game performance.

We lose 1 maybe 2 more games this year.

Revisit the schedule, and try it with a neutral eye.

Bama and UGA are losses. There's two.

Mizzou and UK on the road. There's one more.

Arky and USCe at home. Wouldn't surprise me to see us let one of those get away.

Thankful we have Vandy at home. That one we should...should...win.

And UNT is all but a gimme.

Right now? The over/under is 6.5. If we should lose to Arkansas, then we're 2-5 after the UGA game, and the O/U slips to 4.5.

I wish I had your sense of optimism. Unfortunately, I've seen what this coaching staff does with a lead.

Go Vols.

We can get any coach in Anerica to come here if pay the $. Here's a stat for you. We have the 7th largest home game attendance and our coaching salary is 28th.
So all of you saying a big name won't come here, the pay is the reason. Not the location, nor the team, nor th fan base.

With that being said, I think Butch gets this fixed. I think Butch becomes less conservative on D. I can take losses, if our coaching staff is doing every last thing they can to win the games. Players fail to execute from time to time. But give them a chance. I'm hoping to see us put the receivers into the game plan this week.

I love coming on here and reading all the nonsense. 8-4 is a really good season no matter how you slice it. To think otherwise is just childish.

But keep it coming guys. I need the laugh. I just wish I would go up against many of you in business. I would be filthy rich off your knee jerk absurdity. Awesome.

If you think we're going 8-4 after the way we lost the 2 games we lost....I just don't know what to say. Mizzou's defense will stuff us. Arkansas will probably win as well.
