Bring back the Beer Barrel

It's all pretty ridiculous anyway. You think changing the name caused people to drink less beer? Or do you think calling it a beer barrel causes people to drink more beer? Think about it. There's absolutely no cause and effect here at all. Beer has been brewed by man since the dawn of civilization, and will continue to be brewed and consumed until the world comes to an end in 2012. There are a lot of serious problems that mankind is faced with these days. Debating whether to call a painted barrel used as a trophy by two football teams is not one of them. A little common sense goes a long way.

I wish they would start serving beer at the football games, or at least right outside neyland, so I don't have to drink as much at my tailgate party, to get liquored up for the game.

What if the guy that got in the wreck was actually drinking bourbon? Then we don't even have a problem! :)

I say they should bring it back, and then we should just give it to Kentucky and let them keep it. God knows they could use some beer after playing us every year.

We don't need to bring it back, it's still there sitting in a case at the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. They haven't beaten us since then. So the only difference is that we don't go through the formality of bringing it out for the games before putting it back in its case.

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

I just think it's ridiculous the way society overreacts to something so meaningless as the name of a cheap football game relic. Okay, a couple of kids died in an alcohol related crash, i sympathize to them, but people need to realize that it happens all the freaking time sadly, and abolishing something called the "beer barrell" at a football game will not change that. I agree with another poster, a little common sense will go a long way. I could see it might have been favored to maybe abolish it for that year and that year alone out of respect for the fallen players. But it wasn't worth taking really the only relic away from a 70+ year rivalry.

I bet a bottle of Jack Daniels that was distilled from the last year Kentucky beat us would taste quite good right now.

Gots to have da beer barrel, bring it back in hopes of teeing off all the touchy feely losers. UT's fan base are about sports like footbal, baseball/softball, basketball, track, volleyball. Pick tutu wearing and quickest leg shaving contests, not so much. Support Penn State if that's your gig.

Well start a petition and get 10,000 signatures and then leave it outside Mike hamiltons office. You would probably have to write a letter to a mayor and get UK involved as well.

You call it being politically correct, I call it respect.

I call it nonsense. An 80-year-old barrel that was once used to hold beer has nothing to do with a drunk driver who killed people.

It's not like Kentucky is ever going to win the thing, but it never should have been retired.

We beat them 59-21 the year they retired it, and it could have been a lot worse. That didn't stop Hal Mumme after the game from saying that Florida was a better team than we were. We should have hung 80 on them.

Where's Brian McKat when you need him?

He only shows up before the UT-UK game...impressing us with his amazing analysis of why "this is the year UK breaks the streak".

You don't need Paul Harvey to know the rest of the story. After the game, McCat drops off the face of the planet...until next November.

Much like his beloved Wildcats. They show up once a year for their beating, and then leave.

Ahhh...the certainties of life...death...taxes...UK losing to UT.

Go Vols.

actually he's on the board a whole lot; he appears in the Around the NCAA forum and basketball forum seemingly regardless of the UT/UK game.

Also going to point out he's one of the better rival fans, I have yet to see him talk any trash at all whatsoever, even if it's the basketball forum and UK beats UT or vice-versa

maybe u're thinking of another UK fan?
