Bring back the Beer Barrel

Let's just rename it the Barrel of Arse Whooping. Even though Kentucky never would win it, they would have it poured out on them every year.

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

The Beer Barrell was "retired" just before the 1998 game. One player died, T Artie Steinmetz, and a close personnel friend of Tim Couch also died Stan Brock. The article didn't say that he was a player or even if he was a student. The driver, starting C Jason Wats, was injured and charged with manslaughter. The wreck occured 12 hrs after the Vandy game, just 6 days before the Kittens played us. We won 59-21. source 1998 SI special commemorative issue "PERFECT!"

We played Kentucky before Vandy in '98 so that is incorrect.

BUT Kentucky played Vandy before us. I should have been more clear. the accident happen 12 hrs after KENTUCKY beat Vandy and six days before they play us.

yeah honestly, it was more poor timing for that kind of trophy really rather than anything else

Hey whatever happened to the Walking Horse anyway? Why did they let him go?
As for the Beer Barrel, rename it the Water Cooler and get it out for next season.
Tennessee needs a trophy, we've got the cigars for the Bama game, but every since the Barrel is gone, we have lost that part of our tradition.

Man I hate the world today. I got a beer spilled on me at the Chik Fil A bowl, after it had been purchased legally at the concession stand. Mind you, Chik Fil A isn't opened on Sundays because of their "Christian" ways. But they will allow alcohol to be sold at a game under their sponsorship... Texas vs. Oklahoma is now the "Red River Rivalry" instead of the "Red River Shootout" because they don't want to promote violence. But it's totally cool for the ATF to go shoot up men, women, and children in Waco for no apparent reason.... People like Oprah Winfrey, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton can say all sorts of "Black Power" rubbish on the air. But when Rush Limbaugh tries to buy an NFL team, the three of them (among others) can successfully stop him in his tracks and deny him the chance of ownership..... Syracuse can no longer be the "Orangemen", and FSU had to ASK the Seminole people for permission to use their name, even though they are a respected, wise, and understanding group of people. All the while, Idaho has a "Vandal" carrying their flag and Notre Dame has an angry Irishman promoting the act of fighting! Not to mention that Duke's "Blue Devil" is an endorsement of anti-Christianity, and South Carolina's "Gamecocks" promote illegal rooster fighting..... Someone, please rise up to lead this nation away from the ridiculous path it has been walking down. Names are names, and nobody is going to drink any more/less beer because a trophy is associated with it. On the other hand, people WILL drink more if you sell beer at bowl games. Political correctness and double standards can suck it.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

I think it was in 1998. I'd like for them to bring it back under a different name.
