Given what is made in both states, the whiskey barrel would be more appropriate. That is not going to happen either.
The tradition actually never ended. UT just never bothers bringing it to the game because we just have to haul it back every time.trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.
I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

Who cares?? I mean if an 18 yr old can go to war and die for his country. Then why can't they play for an old wooden barrel that was once used to store beer in.Like the double standard of having players who aren't legally allowed to drink playing for something called "The Beer Barrel"? It was a bit different when the drinking age was 18, but that was changed in 1984.
Put it in the glass case Bud, right next to the Sears trophy!!!according to this article from 2005.
Smithey: UT, Kentucky unlikely to roll out barrel govolsxtra.com Mobile
"I'd say physically, it's in our possession," UT sports information director Bud Ford said. "I believe it's in the football equipment room right now. It's not on display, but it's in the equipment room."
I agree with you, but it won't happen. Too PC a world we live in. Lame.
However, wasn't it the Battle for the Whiskey Barrel, not beer?
