Bring back the Beer Barrel

This game isn't deserving of a trophy...It's not even a rivalry anymore....Maybe to a few KY fans but for them football is just something to bide the time until hoops season starts....If playing to end a 25 game losing steak in a series isn't enough then the beer barrel isn't going to add any motivation....KY sucks in football...End of story

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

It was actually 1997. The wreck happened week of the 98 game.

Lets just let PCism run our lives

Or.... we can have a heart and really care about someone. :hi:

Not everything has to be put under the PC label and I can assure you that I am no PC person.

Sometimes keyboard chatter can become very heartless and the nature of that beast isn't always good. JMHO

when did the whole drink responsibly campaign start? if it was around 98 then it would make sense that they stopped it

Thank God beer companies don't do anything to promote or "encourage" the drinking of beer.

You are correct and there is nothing we can possibly do about things that are out of our control. When it comes to having a voice to speak out against moving forward on more "alcohol encouragement", then those involved or around the situation get to have a voice (wether to a small degree or a very large degree).

Then we need to stop the promotion of events by car companies, fast food restuarants, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance companies, because they kill as many people a year as alcohol does.

Its not showing disrespect to anybody

What is so "evil" about alcohol?

You do realize that these adults that play on the field can go and die for this country but God forbid that they have a drink or play for an empty beer barrel.

I can imagine that players on both sides have never had a drink and its because they have never been subjected to the horrendous Beer Barrel

Everyone has the right to Drink or Not... that is their decision.

Its not my job to encourage someone to do so. If you feel that its your job then by all means keep supporting this thread but I do not think much good comes from Alcohol and I know alot of guys that will support that claim from their own personal experience wether its from their Father/Mother or them hurting everyone around them.

I/we have an obligation to be a voice of reason for many around us. Some don't want and never will take that role.... and trust me when I say that its never going to be the popular choice.

I say his name is C.M. Newton. Liberalism at it's finest.
Count the # of beer commercials during a CFB game.

So how do you feel about celebratory champagne after a championship? Should that tradition be done away with as well?

The beer barrel is just a trophy, nothing more.

Totally understand your point, but there is a point where people are responsible for their actions.

A person can drink responsibly and enjoy it without acting a horses ass and getting behind a wheel. That portion of the equation is left up to the person.

I can understand how it might bring up bad memories for people who have suffered the loss of a loved one due to the stupidity of a drunk driver. But that was 11 years ago. Time heals all wounds. Let's bring back a Tennessee tradition!

The O'doul's Beer Barrel. Just make it a non-alcoholic barrel and eveyone should be fine.

I couldn't agree more on this. The majority of Vol fans I've spoken with agree. I'm glad we honored and respected the families loss but it's time.
