Bring back the Beer Barrel

Totally understand your point, but there is a point where people are responsible for their actions.

A person can drink responsibly and enjoy it without acting a horses ass and getting behind a wheel. That portion of the equation is left up to the person.

There are those (Me as one) that can have one or two and stop. Then there are those that whenever they drink, are a threat to themselves and their fellow man. The name on a barrel has no effect on either. It is genetic.

The University of Kentucky recently sold a bunch of commemorative bottles of bourbon with Calipari's face plastered on the side. Clearly they're over their over their aversion to alcohol by now.

thread unmerged this has become...

I am for beer in any vessel, especially barrels.

trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

I wondered what happened. I was stationed oveseas in Japan when it went away and I never got the full story. Seems like it would be a good time to bring it back. Let's "JR" the respective Athletic Department staffs until they cave!

Bourbon vs Whiskey. Jack Daniel's and George Dickel vs Jim Beam and Wild Turkey. I like the beer barrel but Vader's suggestion for whiskey barrel would be better. Bring it back.

Seems like some other college game has a whiskey barrrel prize.
Seems to have ended with the same incident
Indiana vs. Kentucky

Series Record: Series tied 17-17-1 (2004)
Notes: The two teams used to play for the "Bourbon Barrel", but due to the unfortunate alcohol-related accident that resulted in the death of a Kentucky player in 1998, the two teams agreed to stop using this trophy.

After reading all the posts, I can't help but see a trend here. Everyone keeps saying they want the barrel back only to have it stay in Tenn. If they're never going to win it, and it's not going to be a good game, why have it? What's the point? If we want a tradition, then why not have the losing team hoist the winner's team's flag over their stadium until the next season? That would be a fun tradition agains UK! :)

I can see why they put a stop to it. Someone (I think he played for Kentucky, right? help me out here...) got killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver after a UT-UK game. We don't need any more tragic incidents like that one.
