152 - 52

My response was concerning MAJORS. You made a wrong statement that HIS recruiting was slipping towards the end...that’s bolsch! Those names I listed were his recruits. Appreciate you attempting to educate me but you’re not off to a good start with that slip-up. :)

OK. I'll say it this way, the program's recruiting was not slipping at the end of the Major's era, but his involvement was.

Anyone have regrets?

Hated it when he got fired. When I found out about Shoney's, I hoped he would leave town and never come back. Now that he is a spokesperson and adviser at Tennessee, kinda makes perfect sense when the last presidential election was Donald vs. Hillary.

Patterson was never coming but after Kiffin left he could have gotten Cutcliff if he had not insisted on retaining the remnants of Kiffin's staff.

No. I don't think Cut wanted anything more to do with Hamilton. And Dooley was hired something like three or four days after Kiffin left. There wasn't time for anyone worthwhile to think it over. That whole situation seemed like 100 teenage girls trying to clean up a train wreck. Nothing much good was gonna happen.

Maybe Gruden did play to win every game. Fact is he barely cleared .500 as an NFL coach. Mediocre.

Doug Matthews was on 104.5 today and said something to this effect. We need a person that can coach players, not a person that can recruit. He alluded that we currently have a good recruiter but the coaching portion lacks. That being said, even if Gruden could recruit, his record indicates he lacks in the area of coaching. There's a good reason he's .500. He's currently doing what he needs and wants to do.

Seemed pretty “involved” when he rushed back. Where’d you get your take on this? Cuz it’s way off!

I bet you don’t miss winning a National Title... If you are old enough

I am. Miss us playing for one in 01 also. No shame in getting outcoached by Richt and Saban, but with a clearly more talented team there’s a lot more sting. :pinch:

I think we're making the same mistakes all over again. The big mistake in how Phil was fired is that the writing was on the wall for a while and the admin was so hesitant to make the tough decisions that needed to be made. Same with Doofus and now Butch. It's the indecisiveness that is hurting Tennesse football the most.
Hurts to say, but Florida did the right thing in it's timing of a mid season firing. They are already moving toward the future while we're still talking about stuff that happened 20 years ago and what might have been.
They're playing chess while we're still playing checkers.

Just imagine how we might have caught a team or two off guard by pulling out a WR named Jennings to pay QB. The KY WR played QB in HS - may have been recruited to KY as QB and converted to WR. Did you know Dickey used to recruit HS QBs and use them at other positions because he thought they were better athletes than most other players on HS teams?

Wasn't the other part of the story - Bray's poor play - more a factor? Didn't Bray make a statement about not wanting to go to a "lesser bowl", and wasn't Bray "sick almost all week"? You're looking at the wrong QB for that loss.

Wait, you’re still defending Dooley for losing to Kentucky?

If Bray doesn’t want to play, take him out. That’s called, you know, coaching.

Above .500 in the NFL is a pretty major accomplishment, especially when you spend much of it in Oakland. Saban was what, 15-17?

He built Oakland into a good team for the first time in forever and then won a Super Bowl in Tampa when Dungy couldn’t. Doug Matthews sounds stupid.

Come on. Phil got dominated by pretty much every decent coach he faced.

You say that. And then you'll use the fact that Phil whupped their butts as proof that those coaches weren't good. How could they be, they lost? Right?

So your circular argument goes nowhere. Phil's no good because he couldn't beat good coaches because the coaches he beat were no good because he beat them because he couldn't beat good coaches because the coaches he beat were no good because....

You don't go 152-52 or win a national title without being an excellent coach and beating up on other very good coaches. Period.

He went to the SEC Championship Game 5 times in his last 11 years as a coach, including 2 of the last 5 years and the year before he was fired. Add to that, he tied for 1st in the SEC East another year.

Vols were not only 152-52 in his tenure, they were 96-34 in the SEC and went to a bowl game in 15 of his 17 years (2 Fiesta, 1 Orange, 2 Cotton, 4 Citrus, 3 Outback, 2 Peach, 1 Gator).

It’s not at all circular. You shouldn’t need “record vs. Phillip Fulmer” to determine that Steve Spurrier is a good coach and Ray Goff is not.

Geesh get over it ! Fulmer is gone and not coming back yet we still have these treads pop up. Lets look to the future not the past.

If that's what Matthews said, then he is a dumbarse. On Gruden's worst day, he's a better coach than Matthews was on his best day.
