152 - 52

Then look at Tom Osborne with Nebraska, where the playbook was nearly the same in 1997 as it was in 1977. Their entire offense was built around a very small handful of plays: double option, off-tackle, iso, fullback trap, and play action. Every single opposing team that they played knew this, but more often than not the opponent was left flailing about in vain as Nebraska's high school offense shredded them for 50 points.

UT's offensive woes recently have been twofold: needlessly complex schemes that cut into practice time and skill development, and the inability to develop players to the point that they could overcome this and still produce points.

And Nebraska was the bowl opponent that the Georgia Tech’s of the world would beat to win NC’s UNTIL Osborne started recruiting speed nationally...and he finishes his career with 3 championships with that simple offensive scheme. #EliteAthletesMatter

None - it was deja vu from Majors last few years. Recruiting had tailed off, the teams were undisciplined and athlete behavior off the field was getting out of control. Very reminiscent of the last few years of Majors - not as bad, but on the same path.

Dale Carter? Heath Shuler? Alvin Harper? Carl Pickens? Elite OL’s. You’re wrong. RECRUITING had not tailed off and Reggie Cobb’s drug problem was dealt with severely. Majors messed up by getting paranoid and rushing back only to screw up the season. But DISCIPLINE under him was never an issue.

2001 lsu but that's ok... have forgiven

Why'd you bring that up? Didn't dem lucky coonazzes convert a 4th and huge for a TD in dat game amongst other things? Most painful loss I can remember....ever. We were better but got outcoached.

The fire was correct and always will be. The ONLY issue was the hires and who they had selecting his replacement.

Game passed him by? Run the ball, and play great defense. I think this is still what everyone wants to do.

You're out of your mind if you think nobody called him! He is a Tennessee boy. Spent his entire life here. His heart wouldn't let him go anywhere else!

He put his name out there and no one came calling. He publicly stated he wanted to coach again and no one of significance gave him a sniff. That's a fact. Sorry

Funny how people say the game passed him by. I would like to know how. I agree with you. Look what Michigan State and Iowa did this past weekend. Reminded me of Fulmer. You are correct. Run the ball and play good defense. Its the foundation of successful football.

We were NEVER a national contender after 2001.

He definitely deserved to have been treated better than he was. Hamilton started the **** show that is now UT athletics.... damn him!

Fulmer was a strong candidate for the University of Louisville head coaching job. He stated in many interviews that he was interested in the job and also had a phone interview with Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich.

EVIDENCE!

And they chose to go a different direction. He also interviewed at the University of Kansas. There was an article about his interview. I don't want to repeat what it said because it goes against the delusions many in our fan base have about Coach Fulmer

Hamilton's biggest screw up was having Kiffin at the top of his list. Imagine where we'd be if he had brought in Patterson. .

Nowhere...Patterson was one of the first 4 or 5 refused offers that got us down to Kiffin. If Patterson had intentions of ever leaving TCU he'd already be gone.

They usually discussed it over a Jack and Coke.

Yeah, definitely makes sense for a team loaded with NFL players to lose to a backup QB and third string RB.

Yep...LOL...the previous week the players got off the plane in Knoxville after their big win in Gainesville with Roses in their hands. Just one of example of many how Fulmer had allowed a "country club" atmosphere to develop after the NC in 1998. When Cutcliffe came back in 2006, he PUBLICLY stated more than once that he had never seen a team so undisciplined, which created some friction between him and his buddy Fulmer.

Fulmer was much more successful with Cutcliffe just like Majors was much more successful with Fulmer. Fulmer was a players coach, ie...good cop. Majors and Cutcliffe were no nonsense guys...ie..bad cop.

While there are many posts of ignorance in this thread, this one takes the cake. Recruiting was at an all time high during Majors last few years and he won two SEC championships in his last four seasons and 3 in his last 7

If you're still "waiting for proof" after a loss to Kentucky's WR playing QB, then yes, you are being a dumbass.

Just imagine how we might have caught a team or two off guard by pulling out a WR named Jennings to pay QB. The KY WR played QB in HS - may have been recruited to KY as QB and converted to WR. Did you know Dickey used to recruit HS QBs and use them at other positions because he thought they were better athletes than most other players on HS teams?

Wasn't the other part of the story - Bray's poor play - more a factor? Didn't Bray make a statement about not wanting to go to a "lesser bowl", and wasn't Bray "sick almost all week"? You're looking at the wrong QB for that loss.

Recruiting HS QBs to play other positions because they were better athletes worked until African Americans started showing up on SEC campuses

On probation - stripped of scholarships. Lucky to be allowed to play in the Tidy/SaniFlush/Tasty Bowl played in beautiful downtown Billings.

I am certainly not advocating Kiffin in any way, but that narrative is complete BS. He's never gotten a program put on probation and wasn't doing anything here that would have put UT on probation.

Examples you are using are for players that left for NFL in 1990 - 1993. Just FYI - Fulmer coached thru 2008. Lots of water under the bridge in between.

In Fulmer's final years, off the field arrests, cover up of a murder, drug suspensions, practice fights between players and coaches were increasingly common. Furthermore, well documented that many of the high school coaches throughout TN said that the beginning of the end of their problems with Dooley, dated to Fulmer becoming distant and not nearly as attentive as to how he'd been earlier in his career.

As I said, none of it was as bad as what happened with Majors - but it was trending the wrong way.

I also hold nothing personal against Fulmer. He's a Tennessee hero. But every dog has his day - and his was over.

Huh?

Kiffin was USC's offensive coordinator in 2005 and 2006. The NCAA's investigation of USC was centered on those very years. And was specifically focused on players on the offensive side of the ball (esp. Reggie Bush). And among the charges was the damning "lack of institutional control," which usually points right at the leadership of the program: the head coach and his coordinators.

Then, while at Tennessee, Kiffin (wrongly) accused Urban Meyer of violating NCAA rules at Florida. In doing so, he was himself violating an SEC rule. And was reprimanded for it. And then had to issue a public apology to Florida and Meyer.

So to say he's never gotten a program put on probation is absolutely wrong. USCw endured a helluva lot of consequences, including probation, for what happened in his first stint there. He has been loose and sloppy with the rules, and with integrity in general, for his entire coaching career.

There's no evidence he has matured from that, either.

Kiffin is a cancer. To this day. Stay clear of him.

You stated that Majors' last few years were like Fulmer's last few years. Those guys are Majors' recruits , who did very well his last few years as head coach.

Didn't say he wasn't a cancer. What I know for a fact is that he didn't have anything to do with USC's troubles with the NCAA. You need to do some real research on the subject instead of generalizing the subject matter. Kiffin was not involved in any manner in their investigations. Like I said, do the research instead of generalizing about it because he's a punk

IMO you don't fire a guy like him for an off year. He should have been given more time. Firing him like that was one of the dumbest things Tennessee has done. The people on the bot seem disinterested in football. Weve been passed by so many teams.

It wasn't just one off year. 2002 was awful. 2005 was awful. Multiple players were being arrested every year. Even in the decent years, we were getting blown out by our biggest rivals....AT HOME
