I think you have to be dumb not to want this kid. Has a lot of potential in Butches system plus if he doesn't work out at QB he has high upside as a WR. Seems to make sense to take him as a QB hope it pans out but if it doesn't he can shine after Malone and North are catching passes on Sunday.
Let me break it down like this:
Everyone sees that he is a "5*"!!!!!!!!!!! We gotta have him at UT!!!!!!!
Let's look at a few of the facts.
- Gibson is a great athlete no doubt. I am not denying that by any means. One of the better athletes in this class.
However
- A 5* player is on that people think could be an immediate contributor. So, this guy isn't even starting at his high school now. At QB, he is extremely raw. Is there some potential there? Yes. But he is not an immediate contributor.
- So, let's think about Torrance as a WR. His athleticism allows him to be able to succeed at this position. But he has never played the position. To say the least, he would be very raw here as well. However, if there is one spot we have good depth at, it's WR. With that being said, we are in on WR's just as talented or more than what Torrance would be at that position, and they have been playing there for their high school career. One of those options, like Rahming, Jefferson, Sanders, Tyron Johnson, etc. would be much better imo
- We did not take a QB last year.To add to that, NO ONE on this roster is a proven QB at the SEC level. So, we need someone that would be able to, IF need be, play right away. Gibson has some tools, but would be at least a 2 year project, wheras someone like Gentry, who runs a similar offense, would be a much smoother transition. Plus, I think he fits this offense better than Gibson, seeing how he is a much better passer.
If we were to take Gibson as a 2nd QB, I would be ok with it. But if we only get one, we need someone that could potentially contribute immediately, and Gibson isn't that guy. I also feel he should be a 4* ATH. At no position do I see a scenario he would contribute right away

I see your argument, but let me ask this..But we got Riley. He's the man and he's gonna hold it down for a while in my opinion. I don't expect any of these 2015 QB's to walk in and win the job over either him or Dobbs. I mean it's possible, but I wouldn't expect it unless we have a group of really poor quarterbacks on the roster right now. Which I don't believe is the case.
Whoever we get, whether it's Gentry or Gibson or somebody else, I expect that guy to take some time to develop. I just like Gibson's ceiling a lot.
Just let The Gib develop and let's win big baby.
I see your argument, but let me ask this..
What if Riley doesn't pan out? What if he stays hurt at UT?
Obviously young QB's take time to develop, but Gibson isn't even starting at his high school now (if that is still the case). That is a full year of not playing QB. He was raw to begin with, but then he doesn't play QB for an entire year against high school competition, and now he has to develop in the SEC. That would take a long time, and there is zero promise he will pan out.
Like a said, as the 2nd QB, cool. As the only QB, no sir
Again, I see your argument, but who says Gibson has the highest ceiling?
Because Gentry is #1 on our board per VQ

Dobbs, Ferguson and Peterman should all be on the roster from now until the end of the 2016 season. Even assuming that Gibson is a project and needs time to develop, we wouldn't need him to play during his first two years - we should have plenty of experience and depth at the position. At the very least, either Dobbs or Ferguson should develop into a serviceable SEC starting QB. It is inconceivable that they would both flop with the weapons we have.
Where have you read that Gibson isn't the starting QB at his high school anymore? There's a big difference between experimenting at WR at a summer passing camp that rewards pocket passers and permanently switching to WR for actual games.
Contrary to what coaches may say, playing QB in college football isn't rocket science. Athletes like Nick Marshall, Tim Tebow, Pat White, Vince Young, Brad Smith, Antwarn Randel-el, Michael Vick, etc all had tremendous success at QB in college despite marginal throwing ability. Butch Jones has said that he wants to imitate Oregon's offense, which has run just fine in the past with mobile QBs who couldn't really pass (Dennis Dixon, Darron Thomas, etc). Why? Because teaming up a running threat like Gibson with RBs like Hurd or Scott in the backfield will forces teams to stack eight or nine guys in the box, which frees up the WRs to get big plays against single coverage.
I'm not particularly interested in seeing Butch Jones' offense run again by another pocket passer. I agree with seaofORANGE22 that our staff should go after the QB with the highest ceiling for our offense, who - according to what Gibson said the coaches told him - is Gibson.
Word is he'll play Wr next season at AHHS.

More WR for Torrance Gibson today. Lots of QB reps passed up past 3 weekends. Live Updates: B2G 7-on-7
i just know we need athletes...where he fits in the future i dont know nor do i care really at this point. athletically he is a top notch athlete. we need more of those and less of the 6'0 white guys and kids with last minute dooley offers.
