Da Reds thread

Look for Chapman to join the rotation next year and Homer to work out an extension with the club at some point in the future. Bailey is one of Price's biggest fans.

Some fire would be good no doubt and it's not necessary that it be public. He can set the tone in the locker room internally which is something Dusty wasn't interested in or capable of. He was too much just "one of the guys" which is not something you need or want from your boss.

Price is a good choice and is the safest choice. Time will tell if he was the best and/or right choice.

I agree entirely. Just want him to be a motivator and not passive. He may not be that at all, because I don't know him personally.

Yes - that's spot on. Ultimately it is the players that need to go about their business as professionals and play with a chip on their shoulder. It is the manager's job to make sure that happens consistently.

I like the hire personally. He's got to know the issues and also know that it cannot continue in the same manner it has. He is in his prime as a coach, now manager. Will see if it translates into winning playoffs and a WS or not.

The only knock I have against him is he is so quiet. I hope he can bring some fire, but time will tell. Glad we could keep him in the organization though. I was impressed with what he was able to do with the pitching staff. Now can he mold the other half?

i don't really love or hate the hire. what the hell do i know though. wouldn't thrilled that jones was hired at UT and it has worked out great.

where's cingrani going. he has to be in the rotation somewhere.

So who closes?

If leake went into a long man role, possibly lecure or hoover. I've never really thought the closer role was really all that important if a team has a great bullpen. But that could just be me. But I also, am not really sold on moving leake out of the rotation, either. Right now I kind of feel like chapman would get us more in return via trade. Homerun Bailey has really grown on me the last 2 years and I would be very content keeping him if he wants to sign on for a few more years. But I read somewhere that he doesn't want to sign long term, so not sure what to make of that.

From the article;

Major props to Lance on 700, for his interview with Mike Leake. Here’s Leake, on SportsTalk last night.

Re being accountable: “Kind of what we’ve been lacking. Dusty is such a players manager, it’s tough for him to be demanding at times, because he wants to be so liked by everybody.”

Re unity: “There hasnt been a structure that everyone wants to follow and (for which) everyone’s been on board. There’s been people pulling in opposite directions, throughout the team. Certain people, they play the way they play. There’s not much fire. The whole team is like that.”

Pretty much what we all thought/knew...

Good info, VOL. Especially on Chapman/Cordero and Leake's comments. People that do not even know baseball all that well knew Votto should have been hitting second.

I had hopes Chappy would be a starter this year, but with the pen situation I could see why they went that way. I feel like they have a solid nucleus of LeCure, Simon, Parra and Hoover to build around. Broxton and Marshall are the wildcards. They save bucks with Bronson going away and they lose 200+ innings from a starter in the process if they do. With Lincecum's contract setting the tone I wonder if they will pay Homer to stay or let it ride. Really looking forward to watching this one play out.

SIAP, but here is the Cunningham interview with Walt today. Gives some more info in a really good interview. I was surprised at how candid Walt was. Joe Morgan in on the price interview. Never got past him - they felt they had the right guy from the get go.

BP and Votto are on notice if they heard this. If not they will hear plenty and it sounded like BP already has to some extent. Not happy with BP's mouth and is handling internally, but not shopping him - yet. Cunningham led him into some very frank responses. Agreed that Joey was contracted to be Albert Pujols. If he doesn't he will be moved in the order. Chappy to start if it all works out. Already assembling a long list of prospective coaches in and outside of the organization. There will be a team attitude change and approach to playing the game. Going to try hard to sign Choo. There is some hope for that signing if Choo backs Boras down a notch. My observation, but it would sure solve LF issues when Billy takes CF, give more OF flexibility, and provides more bargaining chips for other moves.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but even if Choo and Arroyo walk the Reds payroll would/will remain about the same due to salary increases for guys such as Broxton, Ludwick, and Bailey.

Good point. Yet, Walt said he was going to try and make a deal with Choo, so there must be some flexibility there. Definitely in a period of rising contract comp. He may be packaging the later three you mention - though they will have to eat a bunch of Broxton's if they do. A lot of speculation on Chappy being traded as well.

Really interesting situation.
