OK Reds fans, since it is the silly season for baseball - do you give up some of the gold to get twice as much silver? That's got to be in Walt's thinking. Deal BP to fix holes such as LF and 3rd while going with less production at second and hope Cozart will continue to progress with the bat? Worst case you bring up H-Rod or somebody like that to fill it.
Are you sure the Cubs, Stros or Mets won't take Broxton and his salary? They used to be good for a skanky deal or two.
So if they sit still and ride the Votto/BP/Bruce promotion train for another season they will need to have answers in 2015 or else the ticket sales will tube with a non-playoff season. If I think there is a good chance that will happen I am making a trade to move one of the big three out with some value players coming in. It appears they play to build an OF of Billy, Ervin and/or Y-Rod for 2016 on. So at some point even Jay becomes expendable if the young guys produce and he doesn't take the next step.
Everything I read is that he is gone regardless of what they get so they can extend Bruce for the remainder of his career. That would be a good reason in my book since BP is heading into the decline years. Walt may have been using the Yankees to gauge the overall interest as he knew that would open up the market. I have not seen anything on what the proposal actually was.
One decent poster on the Cincy site is claiming a trade will happen with the Rangers that sends Cozart, Bailey and Hanni for Elvis Andrus and some others. Seemed more of a neutral trade if it happened other than getting a guy that could hit lead off if Hamilton isn't ready for the role. It would make some sense for the Rangers to fill their needs. If the Reds got some good talent for the farm system it might make sense. With Chappy likely to move into the starting rotation, moving Bailey would not be a bad thing for the right deal.
That's an interesting trade possibility to think about. If chappy does move to the rotation, he must develop that 3rd pitch and be effective with it.
