Report: Nico Almost Sat Out Playoff Game

NIL has already changed the landscape of college football and will only continue to do so, and there's no coming back from it. Nico is a kid who was given a lot of money to come here, had a great freshman debut, played average as his one year as a starter although leading us to the playoff if leading is the correct word not sure it is but, got beat by a better team, and let the money and power and in particular his greedy dad/family get to his head. While Nico definitely made a lapse in judgement by holding out like this, he doesn't get all the blame for it. His company influenced this decision just as much as anyone else. He also cannot be let off without any of the blame. All in all he doesn't deserve all the hate he's getting- I don't care if you're working for the beloved small town company that's been around for 100 years - 99/100 of us are gonna take the opportunity to get more money if it comes. Nico Iamaleava is no longer a factor at the University of Tennessee and there is no point in lingering on it. There's not gonna be a whole lot more of these tried and true to their school guys anymore. The kids want the money. A lot of the posters on here don't get how much that money means to a kid who might not have anything outside of football and a family who's struggling. That's all I've got. GBO

Just curious, does anyone know who this guy is? I'm not familiar with him and just asking. He appears to list a base as Nashville?

I'm only asking because I hadn't seen him until this and it's easy these days to say something outrageous or quotable to get clicks and all that.

I'm not saying it isn't true but I trusted what Chris Low posted because of who he is. Who is this guy?

Josh Pate is big time and has been for a while. Nationally recognized, goes on all the big shows and travels to and reports from games

He is no longer a Vol. No further action is necessary. No additional threads or posts are necessary. Just let the kid go and stop giving him space in your mind. Everyone will be better off.

Does anyone else think with the schedule we had last year, maybe even JG could have carried that team to the playoffs?
Nah, fairly sure JG could’ve snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Nico wasn’t good but he wasn’t that bad either.

How do the other top schools manage to avoid this? Are they just giving in and meeting the demands?

Pate wouldn’t put it out there if his sources weren’t solid. He doesn’t throw crap to see what sticks. However, Nico may have had zero intentions of sitting out a playoff game. His dad and agent may have threatened it, but it could’ve been a bluff the whole time. Also, TJ Houshmandzedah’s report that we are lying about the money is being believed by NOBODY. Nico is going to land on a roster that is significantly less talented and for less money than he was getting here. Not to mention how badly he’s damaged his reputation. If any other players have the same agent as Nico, it would be wise to fire him today. We’re seeing in real time how an agent can overplay his hand and ruin someone else’s career with really bad advice.
Great post. His team made so many obvious missteps. Sad they couldn’t see this coming and literally ruined Nico’s career. Who’s going to sign him, pay that type of money, and be ok with it?

No one.

If he offers his services at a discount then maybe but I don’t see anyone even matching what Tennessee paid him. He’ll be lucky to get $1 M, wherever he lands.

Eh, I don’t think Nico’s career is ruined. He won’t get paid what they wanted or maybe not even what he was getting, but there will be coaches that think they can manage the situation and develop him. They will see potential and take a chance. Now, I don’t think he will pan out, but his career isn’t ruined yet.

I agree. I guess I meant ruined as in he won’t have a cushy “job,” like he did here. Think about it: Tennessee paid him $2.3 M, to sit on the bench behind Milton. That’s some serious commitment by the University to him and other schools see that.

Getting $1 M or even another $2 M, won’t be the same bc whichever school he goes to will expect production from him on day 1. Only having a few months to learn a new system, plays, and terminology is tough. At least here he had 3 years under his belt.

Oh well.

Definitely a setback. Not a wise move.

College football is dying right in front of us.
It can be saved if Congress grants an antitrust exemption that will allow CFB to make enforceable rules. It's just a matter of how bad does it have to get for people to realize that is what is needed. We are getting there. I am usually one of the last people to want Congress involved but in this case they are only ones who have the authority to address all the various legal issues (antitrust, title ix, etc.) involved.

Kinda makes them look bad too imo. If you keep giving into the family after that and don't cut ties after that game, it makes you look bad as well ,imo.
Yeah, we'd have a bread line, post spring practice looking for more $$$. This situation may actually be the driver for firmer policies on contracts/portal policies, which is more fair to both sides.

He will go to Texas Tech or UCLA for a year then end up at Ole Miss.

If this is true, then I lose a lot of respect for Heupel for sticking with him. If this is true, then you can't be outraged when it ends like this. I wouldn't doubt it's true, observing the dad for 3 years. However, Nico showed more toughness in that game than I thought he was capable of, so I'm a little skeptical of this.
Agreed

Nico gave his all that game and those saying different are simply playing the revisionist history game.

I ask this before. Who was Nico representing,? Who was the money behind his deal.
I never recall seeing him hawking cars or insurance like Bru and some of the other players.
