Report: Nico Almost Sat Out Playoff Game

Kinda makes them look bad too imo. If you keep giving into the family after that and don't cut ties after that game, it makes you look bad as well ,imo.
it does I agree but in this day and age, I’m pretty sure dealing with some measure of entitled family BS comes with the territory for a lot of college head coaches.

The “money” used to be a $20k car & $1000 a month. It’s now more money than they can make in a rookie NFL season.
Yeah for the players. Which is why they are getting all they can now. How many HS coaches you think Bama and Oklahoma and Miami were laying several hundred thousand to? Probably more than one. I’m just saying the money was always out there. Now it’s in the open

Yeah, but it was clearly a thing his whole time here and if he threatened to not play a playoff game, he should be gone, if the whole "no one is more important than the Power T" thing is true. Sends a horrible message to the team and costs you credibility as a coach. I remember Dooley admitting Da'Rick Rogers was treated differently because he was good. Just horrible.

Worse than we thought. If this is true, holy cow. The level of greed is insane

Pate wouldn’t put it out there if his sources weren’t solid. He doesn’t throw crap to see what sticks. However, Nico may have had zero intentions of sitting out a playoff game. His dad and agent may have threatened it, but it could’ve been a bluff the whole time. Also, TJ Houshmandzedah’s report that we are lying about the money is being believed by NOBODY. Nico is going to land on a roster that is significantly less talented and for less money than he was getting here. Not to mention how badly he’s damaged his reputation. If any other players have the same agent as Nico, it would be wise to fire him today. We’re seeing in real time how an agent can overplay his hand and ruin someone else’s career with really bad advice.

I agree completely if it’s that black and white. I imagine demands were probably made through an intermediary where the kid could still look good. We don’t know what happened or how it went down. We do know Heupel makes more right decisions than wrong it seems so I’m going to believe if this happened there was some mitigating circumstances that kept him from cutting bait already.

All of the stuff reporters knew that they were holding back so as to protect the kid is coming out now. I don't think this is new information UT is leaking. This sort of thing tends to be known.

I would be shocked if Nico gets his asking price given a team would know they are signing up for a never-ending shakedown. My guess is he ends up making less, and certainly playing for a worse team.

Hype needs to fix the culture that allowed this sort of thing to happen without there being consequences. The dog needs to wag the tail, not vice versa.

I also think it means you shop the portal for your qb since investing in their development is a sucker's game now.

Pretty sure a lot of the Spyre stuff like not attending autograph sessions was known by media but held back.

Anyone signing him would be smart to tell him that his father can distance himself as far away from the program as possible.

Quoted you again bc of that last point. I think you still recruit the position since Heupel on paper at least has done a solid job recruiting qbs. That said it’s definitely a big investment hanging a five star guy sit on the bench then ultimately transfer as you start to develop them. How much did we invest in the Nico experiment?

Heupel (and every other coach) is still learning this system. I know NIL has been around for a few years now, but that + the transfer portal is a match made in hell. Everybody is still trying to figure it out, and more stories like this are going to come up. We just happened to be at the forefront.

If true wow just wow, that’s pathetic. His sorry ass never needs to see a field again. Makes me feel bad for the guys that really want to play for their team and aren’t making millions of bucks. I would really hate to be a coach now and deal with this crap, college football is getting real sorry real fast. If this S*** keeps up I may not even turn the damn tv on.

It's a bit interesting considering he felt like one of the few that was playing well. Wouldn't have guessed that based on his performance/attitude.

Apparently the Vols decided to unleash the hounds of hell and just give everything out to the media.
Hasn’t helped that the Nico camp has went silent and basically disappeared. I expected some kind of statement by now. Don’t know who is running PR for them (maybe no one is); but this NOT how to deal with adverse press

College football is dying right in front of us.
That may not be such a bad thing. It won't - can't - go back to what it was, nor should it.

So what is it? Right now, it's guys getting paid to play under the guise of name, image, likeness. It may be a guise, but it's the legal guise. And it prevents contracts that sets conditions on players actually playing, for how long, and what benchmarks they need to hit to get paid.

Appears the only way for that to happen is for them to become employees of the school. Then the conferences, whether under the NCAA or other org structure, can set some ground rules and nullify most of the uncertainties (portal and NIL) now plaguing the sport.

Either way, the old days are gone forever.

It also sounds like TN didn’t give in since they didn’t get the raise they wanted in December either
It’s possible he could’ve got more money out of Tennessee if he did all he could to earn it. I’m not even talking about play on the field. Show up at all team functions, nil events you’re scheduled to be at, act like the mature leader you’re supposed to be or at least show you’re growing into that part. It sounds like this situation was a pain in the ass and Heupel almost was relieved when they threatened to leave and he got to cut bait.

The good news is that after he and his family have torpedoed his character and name, there’s a pretty strong chance he won’t have to be concerned about sitting out a CFP game ever again . No one worth a damn will want to deal with all of that extra baggage and bull$hit.

Does anyone else think with the schedule we had last year, maybe even JG could have carried that team to the playoffs?
