I don't think anyone can argue that the defense is the Achilles heel of this team. I think if you look at the front 7, there been pretty dang good. Stout against the run for the most part. The pass defense is abysmal. Is it a lack of talent, is it coaching technique? Is it scheme. I think it's a combo of all three. Many say we can't get pressure which hurts the secondary. While I agree with that somewhat, I think the scheme is not DB friendly. Watching coach Heuple's show this morning, he said several times that Florida was in max protection. That means they have at least 6 or 7 in to block. You are not going to consistently get pressure on the QB rushing 3-4 which is what we do 95% of the time. That's double teaming most of our rushers.
I've made it clear, I'm no fan of Tim Banks. I don't think he's imaginative as a coordinator. I think he's as predictable as you can be. He's the anti-heuple.
Most teams on defense when they geta team on their heels, dials something up. We had Florida deep in the end zone and almost got a safety. Very next play (working from memory so I could be wrong on timing) he rushes three and drops 8 into coverage and yet again receivers running wide open and they convert.
This is a pattern from last year. There's zero improvement on the backend. Is it all on players or are the coaches putting these players in a position that they can't succeed in given there abilities?
Before jumping all over me, I'm not calling for him to be fired. He deserves a chance to turn it around. My confidence is waning that he can.
