My thing with Marrone would be was it him or the organization that rubbed some of the high profile players the wrong way and led to dumpster fire off-season? I lean organization since his team played hard all season for him. Another would be the odd Buffalo Bills situation. He had a good season then was like naw bro I’m out then went to be a assistant coach. It was always weird.

Our chances of getting Big Cat and the other Auburn player increase significantly if we have Steele and Garner on staff..

My bet is the way things are going right now, Steele is brought in like Butch to Bama so he keeps getting his check, but can truly offer some help... WHICH WE NEED.

Honestly I feel like we need a HC that ultimately above all else wants to develop his players into NFL caliber players.

You get someone that wants to do that and the rest takes care of itself. They'll hire the best positional guys they can, they'll run the best system they can, they'll recruit the best talent they can, and ultimately if the players see their coaches are committed to helping them reach the ultimate level then they'll work harder for those coaches.

And UT should be that level of job, the facilities and support staff are top notch and players should want to come here because it'll help them make it to the league. That's what Fulmer's success ultimately boiled down to, him and his staff wanted to put players in the NFL and the rest took care of itself.

he's not wrong. it's not ideal. it is nothing to get excited about. but it's not wrong either.

it's just situational awareness.

we're not gonna get any big names. we won't even attempt with kiffin or freeze and Napier isn't coming here.
this search, still assuming there is one which it seems likely at this point, starts with guys like marrone and malzahn...throw fisher or steele in there too if you want.

if we hire chadwell, i'm gonna say we "wind up" with him...i can't see that being the top of the list.

this program needs stability and calm and leadership.....the last 8 years have been a debacle in those things big time. so if nothing else guys marrone, malzahn or whoever you want to name from that ilk, at least gives you some confidence that there IS a direction (whether you agree with that direction or not, at least there IS one....), and they've at least been in charge of programs at high levels and won't shrink when something bad happens....cause, it probably will.

and the reality is, it doesn't matter what we do....there will be no fan consensus.....so they're going to have to manage that too.

bottom line, it's not gonna be a quick fix, and there's still several TBD's out there regarding what this roster ultimately looks like for the next year or two, so i don't see how anyone can put any expectations on what should happen by year 2 or 3 at this point.

anyway. we may just be, again, in the wonderful world of "you don't have a choice".
TLDR

Since Kiffin we’ve farted around year after year getting further behind. The gap is too wide for us to close at this point. There’s no winning this league when Bama, UGA, and UF remain where they are.

We can hire someone safe to get us 8 or 9 wins a year, save some money, and be ready to hire an upgrade in about 5 years. Then hope that hire can get us to the 10 win club. The only way to do it now is the big hire that we won’t make anyway.
Forget winning the league...we aren't even going to be decent (8-9 wins) again until 2 out of 3 of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama throttle back as programs.

It isn't a coincidence that our last really successful period occurred when Georgia and Alabama oscillated between mediocre and garbage. This time, in order for us to just get off the floor, we're going to need help from our rivals.

At this point, I see the only way for it to happen is for our rivals to swing and miss on a coaching hire. E.g., Alabama swings and misses when Saban retires. Mullen leaves for the NFL and Florida swings and misses.

Marrone's OC at Syracuse was current Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett, who maybe getting the Falcons job. Maybe he knows how to hire coaches.

Give me a combination of Marion Hobby or Rodney Garner with a good DC. Give me Tom Myslinski. Let's ride.

Ron Middleton was also coaching under Marrone and coached under Cutcliffe at Duke. From Alabama and has SEC ties.

I understand the vitriol for Steele as HC, but for those that don't want Steele around the program at all, why?

He seems like he's had a good career as a defensive coordinator, and he and his defensive coaches seem to recruit well. Are you all afraid of the possibility he tries to sabotage his way into the HC position as was rumored this winter at Auburn?
