Most UT fans just want to win the SECE championship and progress upward from there. That shouldn't be so elusive.

Correct. But not with Gruden. He has three years to get us in the playoffs.

And here's the other issue: any coach we hire, if not Chucky, will always have the "Gruden would've done it better/faster/smarter" hanging over him.

Next year or so probably won't be pretty for us.

If you expect a Lexus for Christmas, you're going to be disappointed with a Toyota.

Given the gurumers on Salary for JG/ staff and he decides not to coach; what are your estimates for Mullen, Taggary, Frost, and any others? HC salary and staff?
Mullen - 7 for him and 5+ for staff
Taggart - 4 to 5 and 5 for staff
Frost - 4 and 4 for staff

Not saying Babers is high on my list. But there is a huge possibility that we are spinning our wheels assuming we can lure Patterson, Peterson, Mullen or Taggart who all have good jobs currently and may not choose to bail on their programs to jump to Knoxville.

Despite us throwing the moon at him, Gruden might still say no.

Frost will be highly sought after and we may not win that bidding war with Florida and Nebraska.

Chip Kelly may really not want to be in the south.

If all this happens it's not because our administration failed necessarily. We can't force people to make the decision we want when other places are offering the moon as well. We're talking about human beings making emotional decisions that best serve themselves and their families.

I'm sure this sounds really negative. But I don't really mean for it to. I just think the expectations around here are kind of losing touch with reality. I think the floor for this hire is lower than it seems, and I personally think that's ok. Just make a good hire. Hire a winner. Even if it seems like a bit of a gamble. Currie may have to think outside the box a little bit.

There are really good coaches out there that could win here that don't have the same clout as some of these other big names.

I hope it works out. It could very well work out. But I will be pleasantly surprised if we pull off the huge hire that impresses the whole nation. I'm not banking on that. That's the dream, sure. But it's really tough to pull off and kind of out of our control in some ways.

In the end, the name won't matter as much as the wins that follow. Bring me wins.

Babers took down Clemson in year 2 at Syracuse! He will step on your throat. If it comes down to him I'm ready to ride. He is the floor for me.

I won’t deny that a portion of the fan base will always want Gruden, but one thing you can’t blame this fan base for is not getting fully on board with whatever coach is thrown our way. From Dooley to Butch the fans have bought in and bought the snake oil sales pitch. This time will be different. We’re tired of buying into weak coaches and we want to win. Hire a coach that wins and the fan base will be 100% behind him regardless of Gruden.

Interesting there is so much more intricate and specific info pointing this time around for Gruden, even media starting to say it's a possibility... yet you have been direct and steadfast the entire time that there's no way in hell it will ever happen.
Do you at least agree that we are making a stronger, more elaborate run at him this time around and he's listening?

You are also shooting down Mullen, Kelly, and maybe another... Who do you think is a realistic option? Frost?

We apparently have more money and flexibility now and everyone in the world knows UT better make it happen with a big hire or the fanbase will be non-existent the next 2-3 years...

Don’t sleep on McBride either. He throws the ball well and has good touch. I think he’s very capable of moving the ball.

His arm looks pretty good. Might as well let him go and see what he can do.

Callaway's not going to play, either, is he?

This is where I am at. Win some games and be competitive and then in about four years start winning an SEC championship every 3-4 years which will normally put you in a playoff. But lets just have a team that is a top 10 team most years. Top 20 from time to time is fine with me but 8 wins would be the floor unless you have a disaster of some kind.

Agree, but if we got a major splash coach that ignites the fanbase and program, I say we hit on a few top-tier recruits that could help quickly with the bumps coming up.

To me, the question is, can he actually coach at a championship level? Butch did some recruiting and turning around here, and he won bigger than Taggart in his previous stops. The fear with a guy like Taggart, to me, is that he’s shown he can take a bad mid-major team and make them good (or at least decent) for a mid-major program. That’s not the job description at Tennessee.

Butch has taken over comfy situations at his previous stops. Pretty different.

No doubt. This fanbase will show support regardless. Hell, they could throw out Mike Bobo and we're going to put 70k in the stands for the spring game.

I guess my larger point is I just hope, if Gruden turns us down again, that people stop taking him seriously and understand he just really likes the attention. People seem to forget that in 2012, after we did all we could to get him, he made a joke out of us national and had his agent release a statement that it was "laughable" that his name ever came up for the job.

The fact that we have more money to offer is still a great thing. You don't have to throw that all to the head coach if we end up down the list a little bit.

Get a guy who can lead and give him everything to hire the actual best staff in America and let them work.

If he doesn't take it this time, I will not want him to be offered ever again. Get on or see ya.

I think a lot of people are undervaluing this roster. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t world beaters but this is the 2nd best roster in the East when you look at talent and potential. Good schemes/coaching makes average players look good and good players look great. Add that to the fact that we just haven’t seen great development from Butch and his staff and this team can still compete with UGA next year. It still has a long way to go and UGA has a big headstart with recruiting but any coach that takes this job is going to look at this roster in a very positive light. JMO.

I just don't believe this. Most fans gave Butch a very fair chance and I don't remember anyone saying anything about Gruden would have done it better. After a coach is hired we won't be thinking about Gruden anymore.
