To me, the question is, can he actually coach at a championship level? Butch did some recruiting and turning around here, and he won bigger than Taggart in his previous stops. The fear with a guy like Taggart, to me, is that he’s shown he can take a bad mid-major team and make them good (or at least decent) for a mid-major program. That’s not the job description at Tennessee.

His previous stops were set up for success.

If Taggart chooses to stay at WKU he probably wins a few conference titles. If he stays at USF he's likely eyeing a showdown with Frost for a title and NY6 bowl.

Fair question.

Don’t sleep on McBride either. He throws the ball well and has good touch. I think he’s very capable of moving the ball.

Did McBride look pretty mobile on some of his runs last weekend, or was that just me flipping channels?

Yeah mobile enough better than Q. Has a nice little arm on him too. He might surprise some folks. There was one quick throw to Wolf he made a read on that was small but stood out to me on how quick he read it and got the ball out allowing wolf to pick up a few more yds. His deep ball to Palmer was nice too. A inch too far but probably the only place he could throw it to have a shot outside of defender reach.

It's the perfect D to start against. They just aren't very good at all

Yeah there is something about that kid. He is athletic enough to run the offense too, but Butch won't let him open it up this week

I don't know man I was shocked they let him throw a deep play action on his 3rd play last wk....I had to rewind to make sure that really happened. Also they have to open up regardless of QB Saturday or have no chance

Here’s my hold up on Taggart and I hope someone with more insight on him can explain to me:

I understand that Taggart is a great recruiter and that is needed to compete in the SEC, but I don’t want another salesman I want a real football coach that can win. I can see he has built programs but at those programs even just getting better players helps that win total go up each year. So someone please sell me on his in game coaching/development. Is he more than just a recruiter? Honest question.
He knows that he has to surround himself with good coaches. He has an excellent staff at Oregon right now. He would assemble another great staff at UT. That combined with his recruiting prowess should get our fan base very excited. I’m thinking he would get a top 4 class his first full cycle. We would dominate instate and he would pull a lot of talent out of Florida.

I could see why Chad Morris and Norvel both had him as committed at times

Yea that actually carries some weight to it when people look past just “Memphis and SMU”. I just get the feeling he’s a gamer. He always did well in the few scrimmages we had.

I'm sure we'll turtle on O this weekend. Hope the D can keep the score in check. Mizzou can put up points quickly.

This Mullen - Taggart discussion is interesting. I agree fully with the list of Ziti with Chavis' addition of Taggart at the bottom. I am good with all of them, but Taggart is my floor. He has great upside because he learns and adapts while recruiting well. Something Butch Jones is getting canned over - not adapting or learning.

But Mullen has already been "there". Some of you just don't like him - not the job he's doing or else you don't really get what he is accomplishing in Starkville Nowhere Mississippi. Not enough sauce for you. That's your opinion and it's all good, you may be proven right at some point.

IMO his career jumps out at everybody. He learned it from the ground floor under a multiple NC winning HC and ran the offense for two of them. Any HC with Alex Smith, Tebow, Dak and now Fitzgerald on their resume along with the rings and MSU's unparalleled success in their history has far surpassed what Taggart has accomplished and may ever accomplish since there is no historical benchmark to compare against Mullen with him. When Meyer moved from Utah to UF what happened to UF recruiting? Upgraded program, good facilities, tradition of winning combined with great recruiting and a winning coach to produce NC's. Meyer was not recruiting the best to Utah. He and the staff were doing what Mullen has been doing at MSU.

Same deal with Mullen to UT, IMO. With the caveat that Momma says it's OK to move to Knoxville.

I just see our defense getting worn out. Three and out after three and out on O will wear them down.

Mizzu is all about rhythm. They either get it rolling down hill or they suck. Not much middle ground. Let's hope we get off to a good start on D

He did, but Butch wouldn’t let him run

Two posts that describe it all perfectly IMO. I liked what I saw.

The issue is what will Butch, and as a result, Scott, let him try to do? If it was me I would let him run the O - open the playbook more. Just let him get in a rhythm with shorter passes first. Let him do more RPO. As the game evolves they could then let him spread the D with the longer stuff. That would open a mediocre D up to more running by Kelly/Chandler.

Palmer throw wasn't an "inch too far" that's only if he lays out for the ball. Palmer should have caught that ball and if he did that second half would've been different

Taggart would be my choice, but he or Mullen would do well in Knoxville.

This time around coaches want to come here. Quality coaches are reaching out to us.

They won't let him run and our offense doesn't work when the QB doesn't run. I'm not sure I blame them in this instance tho. SOMEBODY has to play QB lol

But Butch has been in the situation plenty of times where he has needed to open up the offense and didn't do it.

Here’s my hold up though. Which would you rather have... A coach that can X and Os with the best of them surrounded by great recruiters, or an elite recruiter surrounded by good fundamental coaches? We have seen both of these work so I don’t think it’s necessarily wrong either way, but I just think it may be easier to go the Mullen route and make sure he keeps getting people to recruit the athletes he needs to win big. I wouldn’t in the least be upset by getting Taggart either but if I had to choose I’m looking at Mullen.
