Dodd: Butch Jones is Underrated

Sorry, but you can't be 0-4 vs a stiff like Muschamp, and 2-2 vs Vandy as the head coach at a school like Tennessee and be underrated.

Regardless of which side of the fence you are on - given what is going on in the media - if CBJ can't get it done, Tennessee is in for a long dry spell unless UT is willing to include media combat pay in the contract.

One would think that Tennessee lost every game last year given how some in the media are reacting.

Quite frankly, the media folks need to get over themselves.

I still think some of them are mad because they found out with the AD hire (... their two candidates were not hired ... ) and other 'fire this coach or that coach' that hasn't happened that they have absolutely no influence on the decisions made and they don't like it one bit.

Thus they are spinning stories just to cause an uproar.

Vol Nation is literally being trolled daily, sometimes more than once.

You lose to Vandy and SC in year 4 and that happens. Welcome to life.

I know many are tired of hearing about it, but that's what happened. Go 10-2 and make a better bowl when it's there to be had and you can complain about the media all you want.

It would not have mattered - there is some in the media and the fan base that would have complained regardless.

The games being complained about would just be different ones.

He's not underrated. Now, if he had beaten Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas two years ago and then won the games he should have minus the fiasco's of the Appy St game and others and Vol fans still thought of him in the manner we do then yes, he would be underrated.

Since there has been so much talent drafted, where does this lack of succes lay blame?

He recruited all that talent. Part of the deal.

Sure it would. You would have a podium to stand on. Otherwise it's moaning and complaining anytime Jones ability is questioned in any way by the media or anyone else.

He had a good chance to slam that door in their face and he botched it.

No, no.

It would have mattered, I can assure you.

Article makes decent points honestly.

Except this one.

"According to one source, there are 8-10 Division I players in the state in the next recruiting cycle."

There will likely be 25+ players that will receive D-1 scholarships just like the last few years. 15 or so players will be "SEC" caliber.

1) Jones has brought talent to Tennessee.
2) Jones has also developed that talent as well.
3) Jones has also underachieved.

Not sure any of those points are arguable at this point. We can make excuses to justify our opinion for each one but those are the facts. Perhaps the coaching changes and having a year without so many injuries will put Butch in better standing but we are where we are right now and that's mediocrity.

Oh, I'd say #2 is debatable. Player development has been an issue all 4 of CBJ's seasons.

As stated before, the defense was devastated last year. Should we get some breaks on the injury scene this year and the defense is stout... we will see whether Butch plays to win or plays not to lose.

I believed we all watched him play not to lose for the entirety of 2015.

Playing from behind, he's good.

Playing with a lead, he's terrifying.

Deep down, this a**clown is still the same butthurt Dooley fan (he was on board with Dooley until the very, very end) who is upset his boy got replaced with Butch and always wanted him to fail.

I've been as critical of Butch, his staff, and his decisions as anyone. But this guy is always just waiting for any chance he can get to rabble and rave on and on about it. What a maroon

Well, maybe he saw or knew Butch wasn't gonna get it done.?.?.?

Dude, this is what I call nail on the head.

Kinda reminds me of another coach we had a decade or so ago with the exception of not being able to come from behind. As a Vol fan, three and a cloud of dust and play defense and hope for luck got old. Kinda like losing to teams you are suppose to beat and losing leads to teams you are beating.

Unless something terrible happens and the program completely implodes, it's hard to argue that Butch Jones was not pretty much the best here we could have realistically made at that point.

He did a great job of digging the program out of the sh**ter and stabilizing it. Just not so great of a job (so far at least) of propelling from that stable platform and winning big

You know, in all the posts, and especially this one, it may not be that he's underrated. It may just be that he's way over paid?

In the context of the SEC, he's not THAT highly paid. He's middle of the pack as far as SEC HC salaries go
