Dodd: Butch Jones is Underrated

104.5 in Nashville did a short segment on the Dodd's piece this morning. Pretty much played out like this thread with some agreeing with Dodd's premise, others disagreeing, and still others hovering in the undecided camp. They did take one caller who was very much a Butch booster but once he ran out of steam Mark Howard let him have it. Not really much to it, but Dodd did manage to own the 7:30-7:45 a.m. slot on sports call-in radio shows at the upper end of the FM dial in the Nashville market today.

Still doesn't mean he's worth the $4 million he makes. Was Mason worth more than he was making?

Butch was just a stop gap measure. It's time to stop wasteing that money!

Based on the market for coaching salaries in the SEC and the success he's had turning the program around from awful to pretty good, I'd say he's earned his money. Only question now is, can he be the coach that takes the next step and wins any kind of championship here? I'd say based on what I've seen of him on game days the last two seasons, the answer is no. We'll see. But imho, yes, he's been worth a middle of the road SEC head coach salary for the good work he's done with the program thus far.

This is a very poorly written article by Dodd. Even some of the positives he writes about are factually incorrect. He's off on many of his points....

1. He says Jones just got the highest picked Vol Qb since Peyton drafted into the league. While factually correct, it hardly compares....Manning was the #1 overall pick, while Dobbs was a mid 4th round pick and is already being labeled a project by some Steelers media.

2. Then he mentions a positive....Barnett going in the 1st round. Yet he was factually incorrect stating that Barnett was the 25th overall pick....he went 14th overall to the Eagles.

3. It's a positive that Jones has 9 formers players in the league right now given where he coached prior to Tennessee. But he doesn't get credit for Watt, who transferred away from Jones after his freshman year as a tight end at Central Michigan....Watt is now a great all-pro DT, not a tight end. He should've cited Travis Kelce or some other pro bowl type player rather than Watt here, as Jones coached him at Cincy and he didn't transfer out of Jones' program....but of course, for a fluff piece like this, Watt is the far bigger name.

4. "14 years of negative equity" since 1998??? That's what Jones inherited? So, if you don't win a national title the program is bad? There were some very good Tennessee teams after 1998 under Fulmer.....4 more double digit win teams, a handful of top 15 teams, an SEC Title game appearance and 10 win season 2007...9 seasons ago, not 14. So, not 14 years of negative equity. Jones inherited a chaotic/ damaging year from Kiffin and 3 years of crap from Derek Dooley.....not 14 years of crap like he suggested.

5. Did he sit in Jones' office and write it with him? Did Jones have editorial control? He basically wrote several Jones supporting passages and then asked Butch to comment on them? And of course, Butch says ..... "I can't say it, but you are right," Jones said. "The story hasn't been out. Name me another college football program four years in, in as competitive a conference that we're in that faced all the adversity and challenges that we had. Plus, all the expectations we faced year in, year out.
"Then look at the progress that we made."

Are you kidding me?

6. So, Tennessee is the 6th best program in the SEC? Really? Behind what other 5 teams? I'll give you Alabama and Florida, maybe/possibly LSU. But then who? Georgia? No. Auburn? No. Ole Miss? No. Texas A&M? No. Arkansas? No.

What the hell is he talking about Tennessee as no better than the 6th best SEC program? That's BS.

7. And here's the biggest whopper of the entire article....an utter, disprovable lie:

"It's not a state where a load of high school talent resides. According to one source, there are 8-10 Division I players in the state in the next recruiting cycle."

Really Dennis? One source said 8-10 D1 players in Tennessee this year? Actually, there are 10 4 and 5 star players and 48 3-star players in the state this year. All of those guys and even more will play Division 1 football. The state is exploding with D1 talent right now, especially from the midstate where we are experiencing huge population growth.

He's trying so hard to make the case that Tennessee fans are so unrealistic about our program and poor Butch is at such a disadvantage that he's willing to either be incredibly lazy or even outright lie about the recruiting in the state. I'd really like to know who that "one source" is. He'd have to have disregarded about 50 other legit sources to get to the "one source" who said what he wanted to hear....that, or he just made it up.

Dodd cites some good things about what Jones has done here....why couldn't those have been enough to try to make his case without all the other reaches and just provable falsehoods? He's trying way, way too hard with this article and anyone who's been keeping up and been paying attention knows better.

And I could definitely do without the condescending BS towards fans of the 10th winningest college football program of all time who have the audacity to ask that Jones <gasp> actually win a bad/down SEC East division when he's the overwhelming, prohibitive favorite to do so. The article partially reads like a hit piece on Vol fans. Dodd should be ashamed.

i think most level headed, rational people know that there's more to running a program like this than just the x's and o's and recruiting.

which is why you can praise CBJ for the Sunday - Friday, and be absolutely mystified at how a guy that is so good everywhere else, hasn't put it together on Saturdays in either of the last two years.

frustrating. I want all of what he does off the field. i want more on Saturday.

Well-spake. :hi:

So did several other schools.

Still doesn't have any bearing on whether or not Butch is 'underrated'.

Florida...Georgia...Bama? No? "Several other schools" like Arizona State? He's underrated because he identifies and LANDS the Dobbs and Kelly's of the world before "several other schools" even sniff at them.

6, but NFL draft numbers a far from a prime indicator of an HC's ability to develop players. Any of the 6 we drafted would have been drafted if they had played for any other school as well, and Dobbs probably would have even gone higher if he had been in a program that employed a QB coach during his time.

And they would have played for OTHER schools if Butch hadn't landed them. And we've seen talented players not get drafted under Fulmer (Arian Foster)..."player development"?

I can only have one e-stalker at a time you guys will have to decide among the two of you who's going to be it.

Looks like Dodd accomplished his goal-- getting his clickbait far more attention than it deserved.

Oh, so you and me and Butchna are all stalking him now. That's gotta be tiring.

What I meant was, I didn't mention him or his name, he automatically jumped to that conclusion. Just like he didn't mention my name and I jumped to the conclusion he was referring to me. What I'm saying is IDGAF.

Roger, Dodger. YDGAF.

Well, LA, I wouldn't come to that conclusion just by the # of posts in this thread. We mostly dismissed Dodd's article early on. Most of the thread has been us arguing amongst ourselves.

I mean, every thread in VolNation turns into Butch Sucks sooner or later, and that's was happening long before Dodd waded in. So he was mostly just a chance for some to tee up the ball yet again.

It's sad, really, but we laugh to hide the pain. :)

Oh, I don't know-- I think the Butch Sucks crowd is fairly evenly matched with the Butch Rocks crowd. It used to be pretty crowded here on the fence, but most people seem to have jumped off on one side or the other.

Indeed. Perhaps he knew that if he wrote a poor, factually incorrect piece that Tennessee fans would call him on it? Guess he's smarter than the article he wrote makes him seem.
