So some of yall fall to pieces when you hear it's Debord, now it's supposedly "blocked" and you're upset with boosters or Hart.

Funny.

How about we wait to see who it is before we all jump on or off the band wagon again.

Basilio LOL
The next step is to cement the boosters not agreeing with this hire as Gospel and to second guess Butch throughout the season.

Been away for a minute with work. This place is, well, oh my, right now....

My thought: WE keep discussing how messy our hires have been. My question: Have they been messy, or has OUR interpretation of facts and events been messy?

The answer may help put things in perspective.

EXCELLENT question.

And I think we both know the answer.

People are told time and time again that information is as tightly guarded as it's ever been at UT, but run with every shred of rumor they hear.

I think the scenario of DeBord's name being so emphatically linked to this opening so early in the process (as in the same day Jake left) could still mean that Butch is just throwing his old mentor a bone and helping him get another job in football (somewhere other than UT).

It just seems interesting to me that VQ brought up DeBord's name instantly before Butch had even met with him.

For all we know, DeBord could be back in Michigan negotiating NFL OL coach jobs with a supposed UT OC offer on the table as leverage. Would also help knock some of the rust off his resume, perception-wise.

Thanks so much Eric! Your assessment makes the most sense of anything else I have read. What is your opinion of Basillios statement? That doesn't make sense to me- let the guy be here all weekend and then block the hire? Basillio seems to mean well and he loves Tennessee for sure but he seems to not think much of Hart.

I think if you follow his track record Basillio has taken advantage of tumultuous situations that have occurred on the hill by stirring the pot to get listeners and clicks.

I think he may have real information every once in a while but would rather play the "against the grain" angle just to get more interest then to just report the true facts.

I take his comments about as seriously as I would a random poster on a message board.

Mix this with the idea that he was also mentoring Butch and I think you have the right combo.

You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours scenario.

Still a shot that Debord will decide his best option is to come on board here in some capacity and a small chance Butch will determine it's best as a Co-OC but I think that is very doubtful.

checking his stats

Football Scoop repeating what they said last night on radio but with more emphasis that Butch will have a hire in next 48 hours. They said he has 3-4 interviews to do early this week then should have a decision to announce.

it has to be Debord in some capacity if he is that confident in a hire in next two days

Either that or Butch has been secretly interviewing candidates, possibly before Jake even left (with the knowledge that Jake was planning on leaving), but kept it under wraps to not disrupt another school's recruiting.

Of course, the simplest explanation is still that the new OC will, in fact, be DeBord. But it wouldn't shock me if they announce the hire on Wednesday or Thursday and it's someone completely out of left field.

Good point. The Jake situation probably did not unfold over night. I would think that the nature of this change has been apparent to the principals for at least a couple of weeks.

Edit: Probably was some lead time for Jake to explore possibilities.

48 hours is plenty of time for Butch to hire someone else.

This is basically common sense.

If we are going to hire someone this week, it will likely be by Wednesday before Butch turns his focus to recruiting.

If we don't this week it will likely go to after NSD.

It is now obvious that Gruden will be hired as the OC and Peyton Manning will be hired as the QB coach, until the Titans come up for sale.

(blue font strong with this one, it is)

I had pretty much accepted the hire but I did think it strange that Butch wasn't giving anyone else a chance, with so many exciting possibilities. Perhaps Hart blocked it completely or wanted Butch too look around as Basilio said (didn't say??) or it's what EricVol said and it's a mentor thing. It makes more sense then to make a rash decision. This could make or break our team..

I don't think a whole lot of people are thrilled with the idea at this point, but I don't think the RF is in panic mode, as some are saying.

Matt Canada, NC St's O coordinator who did a great job with Jacoby Brissett is supposedly one that Butch has talked to more in depth.

He coached at Wisconsin with Z and at Indiana with Strip.

Would fit with the staff and has a QB background.

Not a bad choice IMO.

Matt Canada's Coaching Career

Year(s) Team Position
1992 Indiana Student Coach/Running Backs
1993 Indiana Student Coach/Quarterbacks
1994 Indiana Graduate Assistant/Quarterbacks
1995 Indiana Graduate Assistant/Tight Ends
1996 Butler Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
1997 Butler Offensive Coordinator
1998-00 Northern Illinois Running Backs
2001-02 Northern Illinois Quarterbacks
2003 Northern Illinois Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2004 Indiana Quarterbacks
2005-06 Indiana Passing Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2007-10 Indiana Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2011 Northern Illinois Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2012 Wisconsin Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
2013-14 NC State Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Also whenever we do something bad in a game on offense we can see Gif's like this pop up which are obviously good for everyone.

I'm going to be a rational VN poster and wait until a hire is announced to get irrationally happy or sad.

Do you promise to be irrational? Because, that's all that is accepted here on VN, you know.

P.S.: Pinky promises are accepted

yep anything is possible. I do think Debord will be on staff in some way. We just don't know what he will be doing. I hope it's quality control. I think these interviews determines that move. If Butch likes the fit with another guy he puts Debord as QC. If he doesn't he puts Co-OC label on him

I can honestly say that I am still not in panic mode. Have not been since this started. Butch will hire the person he feels best compliments what he is trying to do here, so I will trust in his opinion until such a time as his opinion proves to be wrong (ie...W/L's because of the hire).

I already drink too much, so that hasn't changed one bit because of this. :hi:

Shocker: Butch is actually demoting himself to OC and making DeBord the head coach.
