Eric vol do you think Debord just came in this weekend to assess our offense as a mentor to Butch and then people jumped the fun assuming he will be the hire when that was never the reason he was here in the first place?

Basilio when he realizes his statements (guesses) might end up not coming true ---

This is what Basilio does everytime we have a coaching search. He calls 2-3 guys as done deals per his sources and back tracks by saying Hamilton or Hart blocked the deal or Boosters blocked it. It's also an untraceable reason because he knows aDs and Boosters aren't going to publicly call him a lying bafoon.

He reported Dooley was going to hire Kevin Steele (and he was), but Hart did block it because Steele just allowed WVU to put up 70. We then ended up with Hart. Basilio never said Debord was a done deal.

If you don't like Basilio, that's fine, but to act like he has no sources is crazy. There's a reason he's had his own show for 20 years. Pilot has been his biggest sponsor (Haslam), and he has plenty reliable sources. I for one enjoy someone who doesn't rely on someone to spoonfeed him for information and only report what the university wants people to know (Hyams).

Haven't listened to Basilio in a while, but with all this chatter I turned on the app to listen...just in time for the "The Sushi Spot" commercial. :thud:

That's the first I've heard of the Kevin Steele story. Seriously

Most nonracist commercial ever. :)

Maybe when Butch Jones said he was "humbled" by the calls he got about the OC position, he was being sincere.

I say that because 99% of the time people in athletics misuse the word humble. They usually mean to say flattered. Humbled implies the direct opposite of what most people are trying to say.

Well, maybe he really meant humbled. Humbled meaning that literally no one worth a damn called so he settled for DeBord, because that would be truely humbling.

Can't be serious... Pretty clear what he meant by "humbled".

Do I think he has a shot at being hired? Yes, but do I think the primary reason for him to come in was for QC and a possible opportunity on the staff in another capacity? Very much yes.

Nothing in life, especially in business or coaching is black and white.

I think Butch saw a situation that he was a bit uncomfortable in, first time picking a new OC since he's been a HC, and wanted to reach out to one of his biggest mentors. Now I think part of that process of talking and having Debord in was to gauge where his head is at, what does he want in his next position, would he be a good fit at OC here, but mainly just to help Butch.

Which I think is being strengthened by the notion that Butch is now carrying on the coaching search in a very normal manner.

Hope all of that makes sense.

Boosters aren't blocking anything. If they had that power, Butch wouldn't be here. Hart hired his guy and Butch will hire his. Things have gotten more fluid because of Z. They may have to do something creative to keep him.

Basilio apologist lol. Sounds more like Basilio trying to cover up his premature announcement of the hiring.

He didn't announce squat. Just another poster on this board falsely attributing nonsense to him. Saturday when it was circulating here that Basilio reported it was a done deal he was tweeting the exact opposite.

This makes too much sense. Just put you on ignore. (blue font)

The best thing about Volnation rumors are the stories created to explain why almost none of them turn out to be true. And then, the legend is born.

So true.

Which is why, to this day, you can still find callers on the radio at least once or twice a week ranting about Hart not having the guts to hire Gruden, or however the story goes now.

I don't know which side of the RF is funnier - the side that assumes total incompetence on the part of Butch, Hart, the boosters, or whoever else... or the side that operates on blind faith in one of those parties.

Just let it play out. IMO, the only thing that is clear at the moment is that we don't have a clue what is going on. I love the discussion because many of you know much more about these candidates than I do, but you guys will make snap judgments of entire organizations based on a rumor about a rumor.

Thanks so much Eric! Your assessment makes the most sense of anything else I have read. What is your opinion of Basillios statement? That doesn't make sense to me- let the guy be here all weekend and then block the hire? Basillio seems to mean well and he loves Tennessee for sure but he seems to not think much of Hart.

Been away for a minute with work. This place is, well, oh my, right now....

My thought: WE keep discussing how messy our hires have been. My question: Have they been messy, or has OUR interpretation of facts and events been messy?

The answer may help put things in perspective.

Let it play out? Come on, this is a message board and VN at that. When do people not freak out?

Seriously, I have done more reading the last day or two than posting because there seems to be too much time and energy devoted to "speculation."
