Win/ Loss comparison

You'd think it was obvious....until you read thread after thread after thread

To answer your second question, no. Butch is not the guy to take the program to the next level. For/to me, that was evident half way through the '15 season.

He left it in a place that is a thin margin better than the death penalty, and even then he didn't even recruit linemen so maybe death penalty would have been easier to climb from.

Butch has done a remarkable job righting the ship. Why anyone thinks poorly of him is beyond me.

I think Butch plateaued. Now he's fighting a strong current not to regress. Like Saban says, if you're not getting better you're falling behind. Why should we have to fall behind just because Butch managed to take us from an all time low point to middle of the SEC pack? That kind of loyalty kills programs.

Yet the context of the current trajectory is only relevant because of where Dooley left the program.

Well, that is kind of how trajectory works. A comparison to where things started.
Good catch.

Seems odd to make up a fictitious starting point and pretend we're in a free fall of despair but..
I see it on this site daily, so I guess it has merit.

Phillip Fulmer (2005-2008)

2006: 9–4 (5–3 SEC) 2-1 against (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama)

2007: 10–4 (6–2 SEC) 1-2 against (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama)

2008: 5–7 (3–5 SEC) 0-3 against (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama)

Butch Jones (2013-2016)

2014: 7–6 (3–5 SEC) 0-3 against (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama)

2015: 9–4 (5–3 SEC) 1-2 against (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama)

2016: 9–4 (4–4 SEC) 2-1 against (Florida, Georgia, Alabama)

I like Butch's trend against our Big 3 opponents much better than that which got Fulmer fired...

But Butch has to get to Atlanta for the first weekend in December within the next two seasons or he will have stalled out at average...and while average is better than the level of suckiness we endured since Dooley, it's not our long term goal...

I'm neither for Butch nor against him; I'm for the Vols to win titles and if he gets us there that is great, if not then we will need to find someone else...but I do think that unless the wheels come all the way of this year, he has through the 2018 season to get to Atlanta...

Could not agree more. Extremely well said, Sarms.

Yet the context of the current trajectory is only relevant because of where Dooley left the program.

We were on a downward trajectory during Fulmer's last few seasons. 2 losing seasons out of his last 4 was just too much to bear, especially when you took into account his poor record vs. our conference rivals and the ridiculous number of off-the-field problems that inspired the notorious "Fulmer Cup".

Even his most ardent supporters (and I am a huge fan to this day) can't argue that the program was on the downslope. The only argument in keeping him was that his past success had somehow earned him the right to leave on his own terms. Fortunately, wisdom prevailed. Then we made a stupid hiring decision going with Kiffin and followed that up with Dooley, who was obviously not the right man for the job.

Butch is making progress, maybe not fast enough for us fans. But I still think there's reason for optimism.

I find it fascinating that before these past 2 seasons, weve won 8 games or more twice in 10 years. Now people think CBJ should be fired if he doesnt win 8 games next year.

How you continuously manage to have an entire argument go over your head is absolutely astounding. Take pride, I suppose, it's a feat most average people can't accomplish.

I think he blew it in 2015 and may have been his best chance to beat bama. Last year was crazy with the injuries, but still feels like we took a step back

So we fired Fulmer after he tanked the 2/4 seasons, even though he'd won the SECe the season before, because that was a downward trajectory in comparison to his prior seasons.

Yet, CBJ can't be criticized for his inability win the SECe in the same amount of time when the upward trajetory of the program under CBJ is dependent on Dooley taking it to a historical low first?

Fortunately for me, I can't be held responsible for your lack of reading comprehension skills.:good!:

Winning the East in 2007 was a fluke. As I've mentioned we were Blasted by Florida 59-20 and hammered by Alabama 41-17 we had no business being there. We beat Vandy by one and it took 4 overtimes to beat Kentucky. Had we lost one of those, or if Georgia wasn't sleep walking in Knoxville or injuries not cost Florida a game then we wouldn't have been there.

How is it that Years 6, 7, and 8 can still be building on year 1 when players can only be in school for 5 years at the most?

So you re saying Barnett, Kamara, Dobbs, Malone, Sutton, and JRM will not provide UT much needed depth in year 5?

How the heck are we supposed to build a championship team when players graduate or leave early?

So? Beating Vandy by one is still better than losing to them by 11.

Alabama beat us 49-10. We beat Georgia on a hail mary. If we'd still won the east, would you be saying UT didn't deserve to be there?

Why wouldn't Butch be better than the last 2 coaches to get fired? They were fired for a reason.
