Will McBride Commits

I think that this class will be fine if we make some of the changes we need on our staff (QB, OL/OC, DB, S&C)

I agree. However, we are sitting here in mid December with the coaching carousel fully spinning and Coach Jones has done NOTHING toward staff changes. We just went a whole year without a strength and conditioning coach. We have no QB coach. No moves on coaching the OL. Nothing.

That is one stubborn, tone-deaf man.

Don't hear of many staff CHANGES before bowl games. Newly hired staffs may flesh out a little but the coaching convention is when the meat market generally begins.

No he was a 4 star with offers from auburn, Clemson, Florida, and Florida state.

no - lamar was a 3*, #401 national rank, 58 in state of florida and 13 dual threat qb according to 247. so everything you're saying about will you could have said about lamar (which i'm sure you would have) and look how wrong you were.

for two, do you realize how many recruits are in the state of texas this year? 439 - which is head and shoulders more than any other state. that's a lot of really good players on the upper echelon that make ranking hard. guarantee if he was in tennessee he's be 4* easy. he's playing at a very high level in 6a and shows everything you want from a qb in his jr film.

what do you see that he's not a worthy recruit BESIDES him being a 3*?

Is it seriously that hard to go to rivals and look him up? Or do you want me to do that for you too? Do not compare this kid to the guy that won the Heisman trophy. It doesn't take a recruiting specialist to compare an offer list.but I'm sure viewing of a 6 minute youtube video reins supreme over the recruiting coordinators of 120 FBS schools. Before you make the Johnny Manziel argument, he had offers from Baylor, Oregon, Stanford, and of course A&M. Mcbride's only Texas offer is SMU. Should speak volumes. If you think he is even on the same playing field as lamar jackson (both coming out of high school), then I'm glad you are not the director of recruiting. A Texas kid playing 6A football putting up Jackson's numbers coming out of high school would be a top 250 talent coming out of high school. I like how you pick and choose which recruiting service to use in order to fit your excuse.

I am in no way demeaning this kid. Hell, I feel sorry for him. Had the opportunity to go to Memphis and learn under a great offensive mind in Norvell. But instead, he will come here, ride the pine, and probably transfer out in 2 years when the new head coach comes in and wonders WTH was this kid recruited here. Guess enjoying the SEC atmosphere will be cool for him, though.

If you want to live and die with the Rivals rankings, there will be a huge variance in what you refer to in star rankings and most others that follow recruiting. The 247 Composite is the consensus star ranking of the services and going by that, Jackson was a 3 star.

And Manziel was offered by several schools (including Texas) as a defensive back fwiw. :hi:

I don't live and die by the Rivals Star ranking. But I do pay attention to offer lists. I know Johnny was offered for several different positions, but at least he was offered by big time programs. That is all I am trying to say.

You're insisting that Jackson was a 4 star...based on Rivals. Manziel was/is an awesome athlete...football,baseball et al. He was a legend in amateur circles. I heard about him in DFW years before "Johnny Football" became a thing. Even with all that, he was a fundamental mess and buried on the depth chart going into his RS freshman year. Family invested in the California QB Whisperer and that's all she wrote. McBride also seems to be a very good athlete, but he's camped very little and not nationally and been more a local product. In the dog eat dog world of college recruiting, minimal exposure and non-prototype measurables can cost you some offers.

Its hard for me to see how a 6A quarterback in Texas goes unnoticed in the state of Texas whether he camps around or not. Purdue noticed him. Memphis? Utah? But all the schools in Texas other than SMU didn't? Seems like the perfect QB for Kingsbury. Could be wrong, but that is just my opinion. Its absolutely ridiculous to compare Mcbride to Jackson or Manziel is where I am trying to go with this.

i have no idea how this kid will turn out, but when it comes to QB's, camps do matter. and there's more quality qb's out there than all the rating sites will have eyes on. there are quality qb's every year that go virtually unnoticed.

so while i'm not going to go so far as making an predictions on him, we've all seen QB's at other 2nd tier conf programs wind up being really good QB's, that were never offered by bigger programs.

we've all seen guys do great things, that you never heard of. we've also seen highly rated guys flame out...you really never know until you get them on campus and start seeing reps. sure, there are safer bets than others....the rating services don't get them all wrong, and they don't get them all right either.

when it comes to QB's i tend to agree that camps and other national exposure can really help a guy get noticed and increase the offer list.

bottom line, we need some more QB depth, and he'll have the chance to come in and compete and see what, if anything, he's all about.

Why is it ridiculous? All 3 were 3 stars. How about Aaron Rodgers? Couldn't get a legit offer and HAD to go to JUCO before he (barely) caught on at Cal. Hate to see his recruiting thread on here.

It's ridiculous to compare Mcbride to them because it isn't fair to him.

I'm sure you're worried about his well being. :wink2: I know I'd get pissed at being compared to someone very successful in my career field.

Ok well in that case we should all start comparing kids that are not even ranked in the top 1,000 to Heisman winners.

If you got the energy! :good!: I'll stick to the kids taking flak for accepting an offer from US.

I will never blame or curse a kid for accepting an offer to the Vols. I will blame the head coach in year 5 for wasting a scholarship on recruits that will more than likely never see the field here.

Which 2017 QB prospect was going to unseat Guarantano or Dormady? We could dilly dally on the "more than likely " part, but YOU have a list to work on. :compute:

A list to work on? I understand the methodolgy of wanting to take a QB every year, but when this is all you have a available, why waste the scholarship? Why not go after a higher position of need? Like a CB since we just got spurned by the guy we pulled a recruits offer for.

I don't see where any of the Texas schools have offered McBride yet. The absence of an in-state offer is the most conspicuous part of his recruitment.

Exactly! Apparently Purdue can find this kid and Boise. But a Texas school like Texas Tech cannot. Hell not even Houston.

I stand corrected, SMU has offered. But still there are a bunch of big-time programs in this state, with scouts and coaching connections all through the high school pipeline, and they know what they are doing. There just aren't that many players that fall through the cracks.

eh, there's 400+ D1 level recruits in TX....they all can't have them all. and i'm sure from an evaluation standpoint, most of the big schools in TX are competing for a lot of the same kids. so while it may be curious why TX, aTm, TTU, TCU, Baylor, SMU, HOU may not have offered him, i don't think it's all that worrisome either. i'm not sure what those other schools already have on their rosters for QB, not sure who they have comitted already etc....

but just from a numbers standpoint, that's, what 7 "major" programs in the state? i'm sure there's more than 7 quality QB's in TX....and in reality, they probably can't offer that many no matter what they think of him.

anywho...he may wind up being a career bench guy, he may not. would i feel better if he did have more exposure and garner more attention? yeah, probably. but that doesn't mean much in the grand scheme. if he can play at this level, we're gonna find out.

and it'll be interesting to see if he picks up any more offers since he's committed...if it is only "attention" and "exposure" he's lacking, he should get some now...

i'd think if he goes as is, w/ou any other offers, then you could probably extrapolate that everyone else has "passed" on him.
