I don't think he's the right choice but it's not easy to have championships at Texas Tech or Wash St.
Phil Knight will donate money to the school Kelly winds up at. They are super close friends and Knight was at multiple 49ers games on the sidelines and suites. If Chip happens to come to a Nike school, thats a jackpot for us and him financially.
i would say at this point with where we are as a program that CGP is pretty much worth whatever he says he's worthPatterson would use us for a raise, unless we wanted to pay way more than he's worth
My point above was that Leach does well in a middle-of-nowhere environment, where he can just kind of build his style and occasionally win the big mid-season games. He does well in the underdog, forgotten about role.
This bunch on VN would lose their minds if we lost to FCS teams in back to back seasons.
so what would Patterson be worth to you?Leach is a great coach, a fantastic interview, he does a lot of things that make being a CFB fan fun. I don't hold that BS situation at TTU against him, and I don't think he runs a flukey system or program.
I just don't think that he would make for a good hire at Tennessee...
I'd love Mike Leach. I've always wanted him to coach the vols.
Vol fans have always responded by crinkling up their little red faces, and sticking their nose in the air like an Old South debutante
"eww, Mike Leach, he likes..pirates, does he not? Mike Leach from Texas Tech? The one who locked that rich young wide receiver in the closet for being a baby? It positively traumatized that poor young gentleman, luckily he tattled to daddy and Daddy showed that Mr. Leach how we handle things in our polite and cultured southern society. Don't think he will ever be forgiven for calling us fat little girl either."
If ya'll would loosen your girdles a bit, you'd see that Mike Leach is more southern than Butch or chip kelly, has more varied experience than most any name mentioned, he studied under Norm Chow at BYU, Hal Mumme at Kentucky, and Bob Stoops at Oklahoma. Hes been involved and/or coordinated nearly every high-powered offense in football history that didnt involve steve spurrier. He was there making it happen and studying, teaching Tim Couch, Josh Heupel, Kliff Kingsburys. Hes done more than anyone out there and has more sec, and southern experience than most all the morons yall favor. He is the preeminent genius in college football. The hermit guru, who has taught and trained todays masters. His coaching tree and on field results speak volumes.
His only flaw. He's not full of sh#t like Butch. Hes a straight shooter, he relies on truth on results rather than lies and gimmicks. Hes gonna tell you like it is, and gonna lead a prolific dominant offense, thats what you get with Mike Leach.
Oh he didn't play NCAA football?
Neither did Paul Johnson, or David Cutcliffe.
Hes not Tennessee or Sec, doesnt fit the culture.
So your saying Lane Kiffin, and Butch did? What experiences did they have that led you to believe that?
He has weird press conferences!
Derek Dooley anyone?
Why on earth would yall want to hire one of Mike Leach's students but not the Master. I see his proteges names thrown around all the time. It makes no sense.
If Mike Leach has a problem hes too smart for Tennessee fans. Far too intelligent to fit in here. Burn him at the stake! He wont lie to you to make you feel better like your daddy and preacher.
Fact is, Mike Leach has been too intelligent to land that big time job. Yep, theres still discrimination in football against the intelligent. Arrogant AD's and booster in their suits deep down believe that football is a brutes game, and need a brutish dim-witted coach like Ed Orgeron, so that the lower class minorities and athletes have someone to relate to. Its complete idiocy, but thats the way things have been run.
Its time. Its time the smartest man in football gets a big time job. Its time for Tennessee to drop its silly old fashioned pretenses, and rise up shedding any vestiges of the yokel, mouth breathing trailer park hillbilly image. Its time for prolific offenses at Tennessee.
We've all waited long enough. Its time for Mike Leach to be the Head coach at The University of Tennessee.
Ill leave you all with his resume...try to find one that compares...

so what would Patterson be worth to you?
Phil isn't going to become a TN booster just because Chip is here. Maybe we get some cool uni's out of it but that's it
I believe he received an extension into 2022, and a raise that puts him north of $5M a year.

How could we hire him away from TCU unless we pay him $6M a year, plus whatever his buyout is, which would have to be ridiculous.
Furthermore, didn't he leverage calls/offers from us for a raise back in 2012/13?
I would be happy with Patterson for $5M a year, but I don't think he would do it for less than $6M. I believe that would put him in the top-5, or just outside of it.
I'm not sure that the move makes sense for him in the first place, then you get into us cutting two significant checks BEFORE we match his $5M, or pay him better. I would pay him more than Leach, and given a choice, I would take Patterson 10/10 times over Leach. I do think that Patterson would build a 10-win program, which would be nice. Can't see him bolting from what he's built at TCU for a program that he already leveraged once before. And I sure as hell can't see our admin cutting the checks necessary to move those mountains.
Butch spent the 1st half of his career at mid majors padding his Numbers and is on a downward trajectory . Leach trending upward and has done it in the Big 12 and PAC 10LOL
Mike Leach himself
AVERAGE (for his entire career)
Tennessee fans want to fire average, why do that and hire career average????
I have searched back through various threads regarding possible replacements for CBJ. I have seen several who are very adamant about not wanting to hire Mike Leach. My question is why? He has won at high levels in the Big 12. His offenses were record breaking . His defense at Washington St. looks legit this year. He has been able to recruit to Washington St, which historically is a very hard sell. I know the circumstances behind his firing , but wasn't it proven to be basically a sham perpetrated by Craig James and his prima Dona son? Seems to me like he has served his rehabilitation stint and would at least be willing to listen to an offer from a big time SEC program.
I guarantee you if Chip became coach here, we would see some financial gain from Nike or Phil Knight himself. Whether its a renegotiated Nike contract that pays the school more or Knight given money to the school, he would be fully support Kelly.
Where do you get your info? (leach yea not so much...Chip??)
Chips teams averaged giving up (for his career) 21 PPG, in an offense heavy conference at the time (while scoring 45+ per game)
Was Chip's D's elite....well no but they were WAY better than most of you give him credit for. Also look at the teams who have been doing great over the past several years.........they score (the last 4 NC games have been score fests......not much D).

Listen be real with you selves we all know in our heart of hearts , We will hire a mid major up start coach, or a hot assistant at a big school, swallow the pill and deal with it .
when he took over Washington state they were in horrible shape. Let's take year one and year two and say they are basically a wash, even though there was a marked improvement in year 2. Year 3 was bad @ 3-9 again so let's start there. He did lose 1 win between year 4 and last year, I will give you that. I believe if you look at 3-9 in year 3 after a complete rebuild to right now with a ranking right outside of the top 10 you would have to call that upward momentum . I'm not saying to hire him today, but if he continues along the path that he is currently on this year it will he hard to argue that he would not be a MAJOR upgrade over CBJCan you explain how Leach has trended upwards?
Last 5 years at TT: 9-3, 8-5, 9-4, 11-2, 8-4
The trend there is pretty much what we see now at Tennessee. Sure he had the 11 win season but that is the only 10+ he has had in his career......and then he went back to 8-4.
Leach 5 years at WS: 3-9, 6-7, 3-9, 9-4, 8-5..........so where is the trend.......looks like he can get a team to do OK.....what we would call average. Too many people taking too much stock in his 5-0 right now. Last season WS was 8-2 they finished 8-5
The only trend with Mick Leach has is average, he can get your team to 8 or 9 wins, with some bad ones in there and maybe once in a blue moon (once in his career) he can get your team to a 10+ season.
One start to a season is not what anyone should make a case for a new coach on.

I will say though that even though he is in the top half of my short list that in my heart I know that the powers that be are not going to shell out over 3mil to start a new contract with
