Why is TBA always so quiet?

I'll have to agree with you on this one. If the only people allowed to post in this forum are those that were at the game with ticket in hand, it would be sorta lonely in here.

That's not what I said. I said don't complain specifically about the crowd noise if you are sitting on your arse in your living room not trying to contribute.

Talking about things none of us could possibly be involved in is one thing, but couch potatoes complaining about the activity of those of us who get up, spend money, and attend the games is just ridiculous.

You don't like the noise level? Buy a ticket.

Well for the record I have tickets to a few of the games this season and I will be attending. Not that me myself and I could possible achieve the noise level I am referring to by myself.

Fine. Still, it's just like football, I can't stand to come back from games only to find people who are either too lazy or choose not to sacrifice to get to the game are complaining about the noise level of the people who made the effort to go.

It's frustrating, and the only way for you to get the arena to the level you want, is to take the first step and be in it. Otherwise, watch on TV and talk about the game, but don't criticize the folks who go.

I have to agree... anyway, TBA is as loud as any. The primary difference is the lack of persistent taunting. But, I'll have to say... it's getting better... the USA chant when Ogilvy was at the line and the SEC chants when OSU was here were a nice touch.

BTW... I have been to all but 2 home games over the last 3 years.

There is a whole lotta space in that arena. Its always loud for the Florida, and Kentucky games. Neyland isnt exactly rocking when its not a huge game either.

Not all of us can make it to every game. Try again, sir.

That argument is weak. It has a lot to do with the setup of TBA rather than the crowd (which can get quiet at times).

I did hear a "rogain" or something chant directed towards Gaines Saturday - but then he went and nailed a contested three right after that.

Once again, I'm not saying everyone can make it, I'm saying if you don't go, don't rag on the crowd. The guy who started this was ragging on lack of noise, but isn't there doing his part. It's B/S.

Make excuses all you want about how you can or can't make it, the fact of the matter is, some folks w/e sacrifice is necessary to be there, and you have no place to criticize them any more than they (we) have to criticize you for not coming.

The difference between UT and a lot of other schools:

The good : Tennessee travels and shows up as well as anyone in the country. If you are at an away game, you are undoubtedly likely to see multiple "seas" of orange wandering around. TBA fills up for conference games, regardless, and gets a decent showing for lowly, nonconference games.

The bad (and unfortunately the truth): Tennessee's fan base is largely made up of older, sit and take in the atmosphere type of fans. They will drive cross country in a decked out orange van, but sit on their hands when UT is on defense. It's just the harsh reality. People get mad at you when you stand in Neyland. It's embraced for people to stand other places around the country.

I hear people complain about being told to sit down and I'm sure it happens, but in 25 years of going to games I've never seen that happen.

Alright already, nobody is criticizing you directly. Maybe it's not all about your ability to cheer on the Vols. Actually we're all very proud of the huge noise you make on behalf of our beloved Tennessee Basketvols. Happy now?

I stand ALOT at Neyland and I sit on Row 1. Noone has EVER asked me to sit down, and if they did, they'd get told to go do something to themselves.

My grandfather is one of the "old fogies" who sits down all the time, but it's b/c his legs will not hold him up the whole game. He still labors thru the walk to the stadium to be there, but just can't stand up and cheer like he wishes he could. That's why I am a little defensive of that type fan. Alot of them want to be there just as bad as I do, just like my Grandad.

This is why I say to get to the stadium. I want those old guys who sat in there and watched Majors play, like he did, to be able to watch their way and let the rest of us be loud. So go buy a ticket, find a way to get there, but don't complain about whoever not cheering or standing up b/c you never know, it could be your dad/grandpa, or you when you get older. You want some young guy nagging you about standing up when you physically can't for long?

I didn't think so.

Well said and pretty much how I would have written it. Though like GAVol said, I have been to many games and never been told to sit down or be quiet. I have gotten a few looks or stares though.

A friend of mine who is an Ole Miss fan went to the game year before last on my recommendation and came back telling me he was pissed because the "fans in the stands" kept telling him to sit down, even called security because he was standing and cheering for his team.

I went to lots of games at Neyland beginning as a kid in the Battle era. My father came to UT so he could watch Johnny Majors play, so when he became coach we went. I was on the road alot as an adult and while there's something to be said about walking into a sports bar in Columbus Oh. and asking if they could turn on the UT game, hehehe...I missed being there. My wife who never had experienced ANY college football game, bought me tickets for my birthday year before last, so we went. I was surprised how much the atmosphere had changed. They were endzone seats in the upper deck, not great. I was so excited about being back in Neyland I would've stood the whole game. Our first defensive possession I was standing up yelling C'mon D and I heard someone say something like, hey buddy they got 80yds to go, sit down! My wife after the game said that while she was very impressed with the tailgaiting, the Vol Army and Navy...she was surprised how quiet and polite the stadium was compared to her experience seeing The Redskins. When it came time this year, I just told her we'd stay home so I could yell and jump up and down, we can hear the cannon after we score. Not making any judgements that's just my experience and I'm not surprised that it carries over to TBA where Money get's the seats and us family guys sit in the nose bleed sections waiting for UT to get a big lead, so folks in the good seats might leave and we can sneak the kid down to get a closer look. I love UT sports all of them, even Soccer and Softball, but I admit when I see The Cameron Crazies, I wonder why it's not like that at UT. When Duke took his first free throw I turned to my buddy and said, it sounds like you could hear a pin drop, I woulda missed them too. As an aside, did the really make the stadium bigger or make the seats smaller?:p

it was the same at SAC except for certain games. But it was only 1/2 that was rowdy during the special games. Again, the old ticket holders. Wrap the first 5 rows around TBA of nothing but half naked screaming students and you will intimidate opposing teams. \\\

on a humorous note, My brother was so loud and obnoxious at one of the games that the Ref from Center court pointed him out of the stands. He was in the Aisle and had him removed from SAC. That is how quite it can be... I am not saying he didn't deserve to be removed but it was quite enough for him to be easily Identified and removed. Ernie and Bernie were playing if that dates it. Hasn't changed very much.
